Very true on sourcing from China. You really do need to check out your suppliers very well or you can really run into major problems. I think the scariest thing is a supplier taking the money and running or giving you rubbish goods. It took me going to China three times before I placed any orders.

It's better to find a sourcing agent in China to work for you as a beginner.

Tips On Sourcing Products From China

If you are buying product from china take the following steps to ensure you get good quality from China:

__ Qualify New Suppliers: perform background checks and make sure you know who is really making your product. This should also include audits on the factories and an evaluation of the new suppliers to make sure they fit your business model.

__ Review the Purchasing Method: make sure the contract has fair terms and conditions. Some Chinese suppliers are not motivated by your next order, so your leverage is the money you still owe them.

__ Perform Quality Control: Do not overlook describing limits and tolerances. Furthermore, perform regular product quality inspections. This should be done before and during production as well as prior to shipment.

__ Create a Buyer-Supplier Relationship: make promises with your suppliers and keep them! As long as your buyer-supplier relationship is good, don’t bounce around to save a few pennies.

Great information. As a side note; When requesting quotations, don't be afraid to be direct. Your politeness often leads to higher unit prices. That doesn't mean be rude - Just keep the email concise. Don't be afraid to make it clear that you are requesting quotations from other sellers and that the lowest price returned, will get the order. (although in reality you can choose whoever you like after that point).

If you are going to be direct. You need to make sure that you have your quoted information, spot on. Otherwise you risk being hit with sneaky fee's later in the ordering process. Where some, less honest, sellers may see an opportunity to profit.

If you are unsure about having all the correct information at the quote stage, speak to an agent. Upfront, agreed costs are a lot less painful than unforeseen costs at the back-end of the deal.
