Are Asian video games compatible in the US?

I was thinking about getting into wholesale video game business. The one question I have about doing this is I am not sure if there are restrictions on using Asian video games in the US, like the restrictions with DVDs. Can someone help me out with that?

Yes, you are absolutely right to consider this problem before you try to get into the wholesale video game business. Though there is a lot of money to be made by undercutting the inflated prices of local sellers of video games, you have to be sure that you are getting video games that are the right region. Otherwise, your buyers are not going to be able to use the video games, and they will be very angry with you.

As for which systems have which regions, I’ll try to briefly explain that as best as I can. If you are dealing in handheld systems like the Gameboy or the PSP, you are not going to have too many problems. The Gameboy and the PSP are the two most flexible systems over all. That means that you can, for the most part, use games from one country in any system. That said, there are one or two exceptions, so you are going to want to check on each specific game that you are purchasing and make sure that it does not have a region.

Of the main systems, the PS3 is probably the most flexible as far as dealing with region coding. Most PS3 games are region free, though there are still going to be some games that are not. Again, before you buy the game, check and make sure.

The Xbox 360 is much more difficult. If you buy games from Asia, you will not be able to use them in your American Xbox 360. Of course, if someone has a modded Xbox, that is a different story, but since most of your buyers will not have modded Xboxes, you really should not even consider that as a factor.

The Wii is probably the most restricted of these three main, current generation consules as far as regions are concerned. The Wii is entirely locked with regards to the games. That means that nothing that you buy in Asia will work on it in your buyer’s American Wii.

Hmm, applying my wholesale business model to selling video games on Ebay is going to be tricky if I have to be careful about which Asian video games I buy.

Hey, you referred to video games having different regions. Could you explain that to me? I am not really clear about that?

So, video games, just like DVDs, have regions encoded into them, most of the time. This is where a piece of hardware is designed so that only software for that region is compatible with it. This means that Asian video games, do not work in American consuls, and vice versa. There are basically four main regions Japan (NTSC-J), North America (NTSC U/C), Europe and Australia (PAL, PAL/E) and finally China (NTSC-C). Video games from one of those regions generally cannot be played on video game consuls from other regions.
