What is Ecommerce / Shopping cart software

I have a question for the members of this forum – what’s ecommerce software? Is it the same as Shopping cart software? I see the two used interchangeably, but I’m really not sure what either entails.

Do I need to use ecommerce software for my business? Can I build a website without the software?

An ecommerce package and shopping cart software provide you with a way of collection payment online among other things.

Ecommerce software is a way for a business to put its products online. It provides the following:

      • Storefront
o offer different themes, design options

      • Inventory
o upload via excel spreadsheet on some software
      o entered manually in others

      • Checkout
o Different payment options i.e. bank transfer, credit card, GooglePay, PayPal
      o Handles shipping information

      • Business information
o Gives you templates for About Us and Contact pages

Developing a website is possible without using shopping cart software, but unless you know how to build sites or have the money to pay someone who does, it’s a bit dodgy.

Essentially, shopping cart software is a website creator for online businesses.

Software like Openmind Commerce handles everything you need in a website.

You just have to enter the information (product number, description, cost, shipping cost).

Of course, if you want a bespoken website or additional features, then you’ll need to budget for those costs.

Cheers. I admit I know next to nothing about web design. I am trying to do research and learn more, but it’s confusing.

From what I’ve gathered so far, I am looking for SEO, payment options and security. Is that right?

Paying attention to SEO options is important, absolutely. All software will include SEO optimization; just check if you have to pay extra for any feature.

Security is a priority as well. At the very least, make sure the cart software you’re looking into will provide your customers with a secure payment site (instead of the regular http://, there will be an https:// at the beginning of the URL).

Payment options can be as restrictive or diverse as you want. Again this is an important feature and that is what you need to look for when comparing shopping cart software. Always be sure to include credit cards or PayPal, though.

Being able to enter code manually is a feature on most e commerce software; however, it’s not necessary, and unless you know what you’re doing you shouldn’t even mess with the option.

On some of the cheap or free versions the code cannot be changed without a fee. And if you want to add extras, manual would be the only option. Again it depends on the software restrictions.

Check how the software charges. Are you just paying for the software, or are you going to use them as a host, too?

There are monthly fees and contracts to consider as well. It really depends on what you want to do, how much you’re willing to spend, and how customized you want your site to be.
