Want a review of OSCommerce. Need to know if open source is good for my business.

Ive been considering an open source ecommerce solution for my business and have been looking at OSCommerce. I think it looks okay, but want a review about it first. Also, is open source a good way to go for my business?

The good thing about choosing an open source ecommerce solution like OSCommerce is the fact that you have the ability to modify it in any way that you want. Of course the other benefit is that its free too.

Ive used OSCommerce before and found that if you know what youre doing, its a great thing to utilize. But if you arent familiar with PHP or HTML coding you might become frustrated. However, if you do decided to try it out, youll find several benefits such as:

      Its free
      Can be modified
Easy to use shopping cart for both customer and merchant
      Its secure
      Good support forum

While I did like the support forum, I found it hard to modify – but like Bill1357 said, I didn’t know much about the coding end of it. Once I hired someone who understood it all – she set it up for me and it works like a charm. Everything is easy to find and use. I couldn’t be happier since it’s free.

Yep. The only complaint Ive read about it is that its hard to modify which Ive already talked a little bit about. My experience was that it was extremely easy to use once I got everything set up the way I wanted it. If you are more of a do-it-yourself type like me then youll probably spend a few hours fiddling around with it.

NoI spent a few hours figuring things out and reading the forum which helped me get it all set up like I wanted it. More than likely thats what youll end up doing too. Once I got my bearings and walked through the program it was pretty simple. It really just depends on how much patience you have.

Maybe it has to do with patience like Bill said, but I didn’t like it at all. The basic template system it came with is very generic so I naturally wanted to try things. I started to look at the forum for help, but there are so many people on there with suggestions that it made it virtually impossible for me to figure anything out. I ended up switching to something else, but maybe I just didn’t give it as long as I should have to figure it out.

Thx – I’ve been playing around with it for a bit and looking over the support forums and it seems okay, but I haven’t actually tried to do anything with it yet. Is there any more info you can give me about it?

Here are a few other things I really like about the program that I forgot to mention.

It allows customers to make product reviews.
My customers have easy access to my product catalog and can easily search through my products.
I can send out newsletters to my customers and can also offer them discount coupons or gift certificates if I want.
My customers can actually email me if they need something.
My customers can also create a wish list if they want.
