Which Shopping Cart Should I Use? Zen-Cart, OS-Commerce, Cube Cart, Magento

What is the best shopping cart for your e-commerce website? I see there are three shopping carts available on Fantastico: Cube Cart, OS Commerce and Zen Cart. Which one do you recommend?

Zen Cart is probably the best of the 3, then Cube Cart and the least recommended would be OS Commerce.

Having said this, have you tried Magento - Home - eCommerce Software for Growth ? It's also free to start, and they offer an Enterprise version for more advanced stores.

There is one disadvantage to Magento, it is resource intensive, a dedicated server is recommended if you decide to use it as your eCommerce solution.

Also esources offers a good free and hosted solution to its premium members.

Wow thanks so much for the recommendation. So I should go for Zen Cart. It's new and I really need it, because some friends recommend OS Commerce. Thanks also for sharing the links. Magenta looks great, unfortunately I am not using a dedicated server to host my website.

OS Commerce used to be the best free shopping cart option out there, mainly due to the large number of add-ons / contributions available, which make it more customizable. However Zen Cart has since surpassed it in terms of ease of use and stability.

I think Zen Cart is the way to go. As a beginner, I don't think I will need many add-ons and other functionality. I would just need that it can be set up easily and run well.

I am curious if you had a bad issue with OScomm or not, as no one else I can think of has. Then again maybe it depends on how many products you are dealing with at a time too?

There are no issues with OSCommerce per se, it's just that the other options are more usable. Maybe OSCommerce has grown so much that there are just too many options, which can make it daunting. This can certainly be overcome by hiring developers who are proficient with OS Commerce (check Elance.com or Rentacoder.com, plenty of providers with OS Commerce experience there).

Wow what a great thread! I am going to check out Zen cart myself. I am really looking for ease of use for the customer because I know from personal shopping experience that some of the shoppingcarts available out there are time intensive and confusing.

Try a hosted solution if an off the shelf solution is not your preference:

      1. Bigcommerce.com

      2. Volusion.com
