I have been using Godaddy's Domains by Proxy and feel like they provide a good service. When you purchase private registration, the contact information for Domains By Proxy (DBP) displays in the Whois database instead of your personal contact information. I think it is convenient and provides me some protection. The Domains by Proxy service conceals my name, address, and phone number from the public WHOIS listing.

I would not recommend getting a private listing if you are planning to make money with your website or wish to build an online business. The reason is because the service may reduce your credibility. If you are building a legitimate website or business, you want people to find your contact information and learn more about your business. I think you should contact the Registrar you registered with and update your Whois details.

Companies that administer internet addresses cannot allow customers to register .us domain names anonymously using proxy services. Site owners with .us domains cannot shield their name and contact information from the public. This does not apply to owners of .com and .net domains. This rule was intended to increase the reliability of Whois information for the public who rely on the information.

If you have a .com or .net domain and donít get a private domain registration, you may be subject to a lot of spam. Eventually, it may reach a point when your email account is unmanageable.

Yes, but there are other steps you can take to prevent your email from being used by spammers. You can set up a new email address that you use only for registration information for your domain name. Then set up a different email account for your business. Another solution is to buy spam blocking software like Postmaster Pro or Spam Assassin. As with any filter, there is a risk of missing legitimate email from time to time.

The use of Gmail as a professional email host is also a good idea for reducing the amount of spam. Gmail uses Google's innovative technologies to keep spam away of your inbox. When the Gmail community votes with their clicks to report a particular email as spam, the system quickly blocks similar messages.

That's true, although if the whois information is being masked you should have some reservations about the supplier and wonder whether they have something to hide.

Whois is a response protocol, which helps to get detailed information regarding a particular ip address or a domain. When a Whois query is made it will give domain details such as name, address, phone number, e-mail, name servers, etc. You can check the whois information of various websites at WhoisXY which displays genuine information. There are many owners who wish to hide their information from the public. This can be done using a Private Registration which hides all the personal information.

You can also get the date of creation and expiration of a domain using a whois lookup.
