Optimizing your images for the web is extremely important. You need learn how to do this in order to avoid a slow loading time. First you should know that you can choose from a wide variety of image formats. Not all of them work on the web. The image compression can be lossy or lossless. Lossy compression means the image will not be like the original. This is good for using on the web because it needs a little space. The lossless image will deliver the same image as the original but it will have a slow loading time. Here’s a list with a few details about some different image formats.

      JPEG image for the web

The JPEG image is perfect for the web. The compression is lossy. This allows you to adjust the compression level using the image editor. The extension for this type of image is .jpg.

      GIF image for the web

The GIF image features a bitmap format. This image is lossless and you are able to save more than 250 colors. This image is perfect if you wish to have an animated image. You can also use it for the image containing text.

      PNG image for the web

If you want an image with a good color-depth you should consider the PNG image. This image can preserve transparency. However, this image features a lossless format and can be difficult to use on the web.

Here you have some tips on saving images with a lot of colors:

      • Got to “File” and click on “Save for web”

      • Select the JPEG format

      • Choose between progressive and non-progressive loading

      • If you want to place the image in the background you should choose Medium or Low quality level. If you want the image to be very visible you must select the High quality option

      • For a background image it should have between 2KB and 5KB

      • For a layout image you can have up to 40KB

      • Make sure to save art works as large images

      • Click on the Save button

In order to save images with a flat-color you should follow these steps:

      • Go to “File” and choose “Save for the web”

      • You can select GIF because the image has less colors

      • Click on the “transparency” option if the image contains empty pixels

      • Count the colors and select the right number.

      • Use the “Lossyness” option if the image is for the background

      • Click on “Save”
