Yeah, I checked out some remote options and wasn't very comfortable with them. I was thinking of looking into a script-based plan myself, is anyone here using that right now?

I use script-based online shopping carts and they work really well for me. It's kind of like the remote option except that the script is installed into your website- you'll need to do that through your hosting account. It's actually not that hard, takes me about half an hour to do and I'm not proficient in FTP or anything.

Now since you're buying the script, you'll also need to buy a hosting account. You can get pretty cheap ones but this investment is certainly worth it, especially if you have the option of upgrading your hosting plan later on. In this way, you can upgrade along with your business as it expands. I guess a downside of buying your online shopping carts script and hosting is that you need to tweak things around to really get what you want. That means fiddling around with code to install the plugins and stuff that you want. But again, this isn't that big a deal, you can hire coders to do that for you.

The online shopping carts I use are hosted or leased. They are similar to what BaiLing talked about but they will host your script for you as well. So basically your fee will cover the script charge and hosting rental. I would recommend this if you're looking for something convenient to start out with. The advantages of a hosted shopping cart are

It's reliable and pretty fast. Also I have peace of mind knowing that it's monitored all the time and being backed up.
      Good tech support
I've also noticed that they have a lot of features you can't get on other carts

Now you get all this with a monthly fee. But the biggest minus point here is that you're physically attached to THEIR server. So let's say you want to move to your own server later on, you're going to have to figure out how to export everything and that's not very easy.

Also, a lot of hosted scripts don't allow you to customize script either. If you want to add plugins or modify something, you might not be able to. Ideally, this is something I think you should work towards anyway. As your business develops, you'll find it makes more sense to take charge of things like servers, etc instead of relying on someone else.

That being said, if you're only selling a few items or a specific kind of service, you could consider just using PayPal. But that's strictly just a payment service, you won't be able to collect any kind of details. Not only that, people who don't have PayPal won't be able to make a purchase! That's something to consider, especially for international businesses.
That's not entirely correct, PayPal now offers a service that allows merchants to ingrate PayPal's payment capabilities within your site. The buyer will not need to have a PayPal account. PayPal's processing fees are also some of the most advantageous at the moment.

Regarding a list of good shopping carts, follow the advice in this thread and then take a look at the following:

      2. http://www.magentocommerce.com/
      3. OpenCart - Open Source Shopping Cart Solution

      10. Free ecommerce website with free integrate cart (hosted solution)
      11. http://www.bigcommerce.com/ (hosted solution)
      12. Ecommerce Software & Shopping Cart Solutions by Volusion (hosted solution)

The advantage of a hosted solution is that everything will be taken care of for you from the start, including upgrades, customizations etc.

The disadvantages of a hosted solution are that customization may be limited and that the ecommerce hosting provider will own the web space; if you don't pay for your hosting they may be entitled to suspend your hosting account and withold your data. Having said this, all reputable hosting companies like the ones mentioned above will work with you if you are experiencing any issue.

To avoid problems, consider backing up your remotely hosted data regularly, so that if you ever have a problem with your ecommerce hosting company you can always take your data elsewhere, or use it for a custom integration with an off the shelf (free or paid) shopping cart solution.

In conclusion, if you are starting up we strongly recommend that you choose a hosted solution. At the start of your venture, you want to focus on your marketing and on obtaining sales, not on the technical side of your ebusiness. As you grow, you can learn about programming and start commissioning custom ecommerce sites through freelance programmers (for example, through Elance.com).

Since it's your site, you'll get much more consideration if you are upfront about it. Simply outline what your product is, what it does, and why it does it well.

In a online shopping cart the First thing it should have is the Attractive look,so that it will attract a lot of customers.More over there should be option for online purchase with various banks and should have tie with number of International banks.Should be able to pay from Credit card as well as Debit card. Has a drop down menu far a list with a group.Should have immediate customer service.
