Looking for a good web designer

Im trying to find a good web designer for my ecommerce site. Is there a what to look for in a web designer guide out there somewhere for people like me (read: people with no clue)?

Artistic talent is not one of my traits neither is building web pages. I want a great website and I am willing to pay to make that happen.

Web designers can be found at all skill levels and prices.

As far as a “what to look for guide” you can refer to the points below:

      Basic Skillset Required:
o HTML is the basic, the more skills the more versatile your website can be.
o Are they familiar with CSS, javascript, flash, C++, HTML5, XHTML?
o Strategies to get the traffic on your website

      Prior Design Experience
o Not necessarily a deal breaker, but do you really want to be their first?
o Look at their portfolio on their website. To that end, look at their website. Does their style appeal to you? Do they overuse Web 2.0 icons, flashy scripts, etc?
o How will using this particular web designer help your business?

      Customer Service
o Will the web designer be there when something goes wrong?
o Will you be able to contact them when you need to update your site?

      Contracts
o A professional will sign a contract with you ensuring that your work is completed in a timely and professional manner.
o Contracts guarantee the price and sign over the IP rights to you (if you didn’t have this, you would have to pay the web designer every time you changed the site)

Your website is visual language to your customer. What message do you want the design to convey? A good web designer will translate your vision effectively enough to give you a website you want.

People want to know what your site is all about, that they can trust the information, and that it is usable.

A good web designer will seamlessly marry original design with utility.

Using a local web designer is good since you can meet face to face. A Google search can help you find web designers in the UK. I’m sure you can find some in your area, as long as you don't live somewhere remote.

Sounds simple enough, I suppose. When I find a web designer do I have to pay them up front or do they get paid when the job is over?

Make sure your web designer helps you with search engine optimization (SEO). This is a fairly common request therefore I would be wary of any developer that charge extra for the service.

Is having a web designer necessary? I was just going to use one of the ecommerce all-in-one packages.

Yes, you need to pay the designer up front. At the very least, agree to an escrow service where they know that the money will come to them immediately after their services are complete. They’re providing a custom-designed product for you that takes hundreds of man-hours to churn out, tons of creativity, and an intimate knowledge of all kinds of scripts, as well as infinite patience with you as a client.

You would not send something out to someone who did not first pay for it? Just because you can’t touch a website doesn’t mean it’s no less of a product or service rendered.

Like I said, use an escrow service if you don’t want to pay everything up front, but pay a sizable percentage at the beginning.

Hiring a web designer is not mandatory, though many businesses find it helpful to have someone else design and launch their website.

Web designers not only help with the overall look of the website, but help with servers, SEO, code, cross-browser optimization (making sure the site is accessible in all browsers), as well as several other integral portions of your website.
