Ideas and advice for a new website

I'm opening a new retail store selling electric mopeds and want to try to develop a website with a little guidance from someone that provides the basic tools to work with.

I am new at this, so any advice would be helpful and appreciated.

      Regards to all,

      ronw

      Hi ronw,

You have a couple of options when choosing to create a website. You can either create it yourself, buy a template website or have a personalized website created by a web site developer. If you can create a website on your own or with helps from friends, then that is a great way to get your own website up quickly without having to invest to much money.

There are many businesses out there who sell ready template websites at reasonable prices, these are great for starters who want to invest as little as possible. When you have more money to invest you can think of getting more features on your template website or in the meanwhile start to create your own.

Having a web site designed and created for you does not have to be to expensive, the costs really depend on which features you want your website to have.

For template websites you can use Big Commerce and if you choose to have a website created for you then you could look at Elance to find developers and designers.

Also eSources offers a free, fully functional eCommerce website to its premium members, so if you sign up with eSources you could source verified suppliers and start selling on line immidiatly.

      Hope this helps

Start with a Wordpress website and install a shopping cart plug-in (free). If you start getting sales enquiries, move up to Magento (also free). Anything beyond Wordpress and you'll need some php coding skills. DO NOT invest in a pay-monthly payment gateway until you're getting regular daily/weekly sales - use basic PayPal or equivalent to begin with.

I design websites, and I just started creating eCommerce sites a few months ago. I have learned so much.

Creating from scratch will take the most time, but be the least expensive (in actual dollars for hosting) and give you the most options.

Using an online builder, where they give you the website, templates, hosting and support is the most expensive and least stressful and time consuming.

Today I started using Ecwid with my Joomla 1.5 site. There is a free option and it can be integrated with an existing website. The features and optons are awesome, it is easy to understand and navigate, there is a support forum and it integrates with many different types of websites, by using code snippets, installed into some web pages or by using an upload feature, available with many platforms.

Use WordPress as it is best user friendly content management system. Install shopping cart plug in.

      Hi,

I would agree with KevinStylus here. You should probably first check the market response to you product by starting a free website. Ebay and Amazon are another great way to initiate your business.

      Goodluck with the sales.

      Cheers

Unless you are a professional, get someone to design your website for you. These DIY website builders all look the same and in my opinion look tacky. I think they have a habit of driving customers away. If your website looks professional, you are far likely to get more customers. The outlay at the start may be more, but the end result is generally much better.

When planning to put up your own website, you have to be clear on your objectives. Make it clear why you want to have it done so you’ll know what to target and your succeeding steps will conform to these objectives. Then, think of domain name and have it registered. Make it as simple as you can so it’ll be easier to remember. Afterwards, work on your website design. You can seek help from professional web designers or create it yourself using website templates that are available online. Make its content as precise, engaging and informative as possible so those who will visit your website will keep on leafing through it, hence, your chances of obtaining sales.

I agree with your opinion. Ebay and Amazon are really nice platforms to start your business. They are very much popular, you can host your web store on Amazon for a low fee and can take advantage of its benefits.

      Best of luck!!

Hi! It's important to think about how you are going to market your business after building it. If you want to market on EBAY then building a store there is perfect! But if you want to lower your cost go with a wordpress site. Use themeforest.com to find a wonderful theme and get hosting for cheap at hostgator. Marketing will take more time and thus more effort but at least you'd save a ton of money compared to ebay's listing fees. Best of Luck!
