Everyone has their opinions on how to choose the best domain name, but I think most of us would agree that the following are all universally important when choosing a name for your domain:

Matching Website Name and Domain Name

o The domain name should match the name of your website (E.G. If your website is called “My Domain”, your domain name should be as close to “https://www.wholesaleforum.com/discuss/www.mydomain.com” as possible.)
o You could even use “my.domain.com” = MY is the country code for Malaysia. Country codes are very useful when it comes to creating unique domain names.

      Descriptive
o Do people know what to expect from your webpage based on the domain name?

      Memorable
o Want people to be able to recall your domain name quickly

      Employ the “.com” Suffix
o .com is the most popular domain suffix
o Local businesses like to use .co.uk

      Simplistic
o Avoid misspellings, numbers, hyphens, underscores, etc. if at all possible

      Marketability
o Who is your target audience? Will the name be something they recognize as relevant to their interests? Your site name needs to market itself, and it needs to appeal to the people who matter most to you.

Before you name your business, try to find a domain name. If you can’t change the business name, then adapt your domain accordingly.

Be creative, but keep in mind that your domain name should be to the point, memorable, and easy to type/spell.

Use one of your primary keywords (one of the main descriptions of your business) along with the brand/company name.

For instance people are more apt to remember teacupups.com instead of reallycutesmallpoodles.com

what are you selling? What type of website do you have? Think about those things and think of something short and descriptive of your company.

DomainsBot - Available domain suggestions, name spinner, expired and expiring domain name search is a website that allows you to search for available domain names.

I have seen sites that use 4u or 2u in the domain name and they seem to work. Are all spelling variations off limits?

A good domain name conjures up an image for the user. To steal McJennings’s example of teacupups – you know this is a unique site and you know it’s about dogs.

The domain name should set you apart from your competition. See what your competitors are using to get some ideas.

When you do choose a domain name I would recommend buying all variations including .net and .org this way your competitor can’t use it, and you can redirect to your actual site if a user types in the wrong suffix.

Some spelling variations work, but only if your brand is well known. That means if you are starting out then you will need to promote your domain name.

4u and 2u can work only if the people looking of your page know what to type in.

A well thought out domain name can help you in SEO rankings and credibility.

If the domain name is the same as your business/website name then search engines will recognize your site faster.

Spelling variations can be used though do it sparingly; certainly not as a first choice.

Be careful when using a domain name that is very similar to that of a competitor.

If you choose that option then you most likely are using a variation of the name.

For example the competition domain is “cheapclothing” and yours is “bestcheapclothing”. If yours is typed in wrong then your competitor could potentially get your business.

A good domain name is going to separate you from the competition, so don’t box yourself into what others are already doing (see above example). You can use it as a guide, but don’t be afraid to show individuality.
