You’ll get an argument over which web host is the best for you, especially since none of us have any idea what you’re selling. No matter what your website is for, though, there are universal factors to keep in mind when shopping around for a web host:

      • Usability

o Can beginner use this web host? Assess your skill level to see how much assistance you will need to develop your site.
o You want to have an easy access to the host to make changes

      • Design options

o Does the host provide website templates?
o Can you design your own site?

      • Expansion Opportunities

o Will the host be good enough for your business if it expands? If you’re planning on expanding, make sure the host can either provide the kind of bandwidth you need, or give you the option of dedicating a server to your business, otherwise you’ll have to move.

      • Security options

o How are they protecting your information?
o Are they trustworthy (do they have a legitimate form of payment? Is your personal information kept private?)?

      • Customer Service

o If your site is down and you need it up ASAP, can you call? Email? Chat? How good is their customer service? Is it 24/7?

      • Up time (when site is accessible) vs down time (when the site is not accessible)

o The website is going to run 24/7 as should your web host
o Don’t use anything with less than 99.7% up time

Research different web hosts and make a list of your top choices. Compare them based on what they can do for you and what you need them to do for you.

Rackspace is one of the best UK web hosts I know of, and one that I personally use. Rackspace is easy to use and manage, and their customer service department is great, too.

If you do some homework beforehand you should skip any surprises. The web host should provide you with design options, email addresses, fast hosting and an ecommerce option.

Rackspace is a good web host but is costly. Sky.uk.net has a free merchant account, unlimited data transfer, choice of payment options, etc

Appreciate the suggestions for a reliable web host. It’s definitely easier to look at a host now that I know what I need. Thanks for the list McJennings! Gives me something to think about

Are their web hosts that handle the shopping cart feature?

Yeah, the shopping cart feature isn’t hard to add to a website. There are several templates. I know sky.uk has a cart built into most of their designs.

When you look at a host’s cart options, compare them with their security options. A website host may provide you with a fast checkout process but leave your customer’s information vulnerable in the process.

Security is a big concern for me. I don’t want to be sued for identity fraud or anything of that nature. I know I can put in a disclaimer in my ToS, but I don’t even want to be called into question in the first place.
