Referral Marketing Tips: Turn Customers Into Your Sales Force

The smartest move you can make to bump up revenue and profits in a down economy is to bring in more customers who are already in love with your product, service or brand. These people are immensely profitable because they do not require the time or energy as traditional marketing costs. When they step through your door they have heard great things about your business and they are highly interested about it. If you treat them right, a great number of them will become repeat buyers with little work on your end.

Here's a simple list of things you can work on to bump up customer referrals for your business. Do not worry, they are not complicated and they do not cost an arm and a leg. And if you plan it just right, they will even teach you what it takes to build a better business.

      Get to know your customers
Talk to them to understand truly what your customers want. If most your customers are related to your employees, then you should highlight those relationships. Always find ways to have the real, passionate, and continuing conversations with them. This includes inviting someone to lunch. It means planning social events at your business. It means starting with a simple questionnaire and ending with a meeting. It could also mean using email or other Web 2.0 tactics.

      Lead by serving
I know you are already doing this to better your business. But all the things you do to increase customer referrals must be beneficial to your customers. Teach them while you involve them.

      Involve your customers
Think of new ways to get your customers involved with your business. For a lucky few, a simple phone call or lunch at your favorite restaurant is enough. For others you probably have to mingle with them to understand their solutions to the obstacles you are facing. Build communities for your customers to become a part of. Blogs and forums are widely known for this.

Have employees partake of the activities
Let them contribute in their own way. Do not have them use rehearsed lines or strictly manage their contributions. Have them get to know the customers in a natural way and vice-versa. The more your customers know the business and its employees, the higher probability they will recommend others to your business.

      Hire friendly people
You can coach, teach, and train many people but being a naturally friendly person just is not one of them. And besides being friendly, you should look for people who have a routine of focusing everything on the customer, who goes that extra mile to meet their needs. The best ways to see this for yourself is to watch for it when you are a customer in another business. When you meet other employees who are good at this, let them know what you are doing. Build a relationship just if they are looking for work soon.

      Remind yourself constantly
I know this sounds trivial, but it does work. Create mental posters of the top ten things your customers want from your business. Make sure to add customer service as your number one priority so everyone knows what to expect. Strategically place them around your business to remind others of the values you uphold. Also, use sticky notes, calendars, emails, and anything else to keep those ideas fresh in your employee's mind.

      Share the good news
When customers praise your business and its employees, let everyone know. Celebrate the occasion! Let your employees know you care by taking them out to eat. Take pictures of the moment and place it where people will see it. You can even talk about it in future meetings.

When your business is driven by value, your customers will notice the difference. And they will love it. Lead by serving and they will always come back. On top of that, they will refer all their friends.
