Which product should I start to sell online - Trends or Niche products

      Hello everyone,

So after years of "should I" vs "shouldn't I" I have decided I'm going to give it a go. I'm going to try and start a little on-line business

I work at the moment and I'm going to continue to as I know times are hard for everyone. However, I do believe things will pick up soon.

Now, here is the question: Should I concentrate on selling products that I'm intrested in, which I do as a hobby? Or should I go with what's trendy?

Cheers everyone and good luck in the future,

      Andy

      Hi Andy,

      Welcome to Wholesale Forum

If you want to build a business that will withstand the test of time, we recommend focusing on a niche segment you are passionate about, trying to unearth innovative or high value/low cost products within your chosen niche. By selling products you are knowledgeable about, you will immediately convey that passion to your customers, who will in turn feel confident about buying from an experienced and trustworthy seller. This will allow you to accelerate the build up of a loyal following.

Ideally, the product you choose should have a high demand to low competition ratio, to guarantee your business sufficient margins to survive and expand. To learn more about niche markets you should read the following threads:Selling products which are "trendy" and "in" can appear to be a lucrative market because of the high levels of perceived demand; however considering demand alone is the doom of many businesses, those who fail to account for the level of competition in their evaluation. Choosing niche markets means choosing markets with a good level of demand, with however is either too small or too variable for the large retailers to pursue.

Another skill you will need to develop is creative marketing, which some refer to as guerrilla marketing. Using marketing leverage techniques that can give your message-with-a-small-budget the resonance of a multi-million dollar ad campaign. Today's technologies like facebook, twitter and pinterest give retailers the opportunity to magnify their messages cost effectively; note that these opportunities won't be available forever, therefore you should always aim to innovate your marketing.

If you are planning to resell on eBay, you should use a tool like Terapeak to find out which products are selling best, and how to list them for maximum sales and profits.

You can read more about Terapeak at the following threads:To find thousands of verified trade suppliers for the products you have chosen to sell, we recommend using the three largest online trade directories of verified wholesale suppliers eSources (Over 90,000 verified trade suppliers), Wholesale Deals (Over 50,000 verified trade suppliers) and Worldwide Brands (Over 8,000 verified trade suppliers). All three list thousands of verified wholesalers, distributors, manufacturers and drop shippers.

I do think you should sell the products which you are interested and familar with. Thus, you will have the enough interest to do all the work, like how to market your business.Coz the advertising is a long run game which you should play including seo work.So i hope you can like your products before you choose to sell.

      HI Andy,,

I have been buying and selling products for many years now, I wasn't very successful at first because I never knew enough about my products, including knowing how to sell them or where to sell them wasn't easy.

I would suggest picking a product family that you have an interest in, which means when you do research on them the information is absorbed easily. For example, if you are out and about, at the supermarket, at the car wash, anywhere, if you see a snippet of information about the products you sell, you will notice it and absorb it, often without realising.

When you deal with products you are comfortable with, that comfort is conveyed to the customer, who in turn becomes comfortable buying from you.
