Do I require a license to sell video games in the US - Selling PC and Console Games

I have a very simple question: Do I need a licence to sell video games? A colleague told me that he needed one for doing it, but I cant seem to find a regulation about it.

As in most cases, there are variables. For instance, you may be trying to sell a game you developed yourself or you may simply be trying to sell a game that is already on the market.

If you are selling a game you have developed yourself, you can sell it to a game publisher without having to get any kind of a licence. The publisher will pay all fees pertaining to licences and permits.

If you are selling on eBay for either case, go ahead and get a business licence and tax permit from local authorities. You can also consult a lawyer who specializes in business law; that person will know all the latest regulations on selling video games.

Although I am developing some games myself and will use that information in the future, I am actually now in the camp of trying to resell video games in a store.

Every state differs in rules about business licences, so you should definitely check out your state’s or get in touch with a licencing lawyer who can fill you in. Generally speaking, though, you are going to need a licence to open a video game store.

      ● Make sure that where your store is located is zoned correctly for a business.

      ● Go to your local county clerk’s office and enquire into details about opening a business.

In some states, video game stores must apply for a video game registration. Each game sold also has to be licenced to the creator of that game.
