Buying Overstock And Returns Directly from Retailers - Sourcing Surplus Stock

I've been buying truckloads of pallets from resellers and have had a quite a bit of luck selling them, but I cannot seem to figure out how to buy overstock and customer returns directly.

I'd like to buy overstock and returns from any of the major US retailers such as Macy's, Foot Locker, Academy Sports, etc etc. Is there a trick to getting an "in" to make these purchases?

We have a significant amount of capital to make the purchases if that makes a difference.

      Hi Frankenberry,

      Welcome to Wholesale Forum

You should start by approaching some of the large retailers you mentioned to ask them about buying their clearance stock directly. However, note that many large US retailers may already have appointed wholesale liquidators or other liquidation sources to get rid of their surplus stock. Visit and contact individual department stores as opposed to contacting the companies' headquarters, because each individual store might get rid of their surplus stock in different manners.

Also consider setting up your own liquidation business, offering to buy liquidation stock from large US retailers.

By contacting smaller apparel retailers you increase your chances of getting your hands on overstocks and customer returns. You should investigate when a retailer changes their stock to make way for new season apparel and approach them about buying their clearance stock. Also keep your eyes open for large retailers who are going out of business.

More and more apparel retailers are looking for new ways of getting rid of their overstocks and customer returns, they have noticed a profitable business opportunity in offering their overstocks and customer returns at discounted prices. Many of them already have a subsidiary clearance retail website and others simply sell their discounted stock either in smaller joblots, or at retail on auction websites like eBay. Some large retailers can also be found on online B2B stock clearance market places like Liquidation.com - Wholesale and Surplus Auctions by Liquidators

Another idea is to become an official / subsidiary clearance retailer for one of the retailers you have mentioned. You could create a business plan and present this business opportunity to many US retailers and see if they are interested in working together.

If you have enough capital you can also have a look into buying and holding new season branded and unbranded stock yourself and slowly work your way up to becoming a large apparel retailer.

      Hope this helps
