      Buying direct from manufacturers - Sourcing products

      If you buy direct from a manufacturer with the intention of selling online do you have to be a wholesaler?

      Welcome to Wholesale Forum

      If you want to be able to buy directly from a manufacturer you do not have to be a wholesale supplier, but you do have to be registered in the UK as either a sole trader or limited company.

      Usually you would have to go through an authorised distributor or wholesale supplier to get stock, but if the company is small enough you could try contacting the factory directly and ask them what you can do to order directly from them.

      Since manufacturers need to shift high quantities of stock, you need to be ready to handle these large amounts, you need to invest a considerate amount of capital and need enough storage space. An advantage of buying directly from the manufacturer is that they can offer a lower price per unit and this increases your profit margins.

      One of the manufacturers requirements could be that you need to own a brick and mortar store or "physical presence". They are not likely to work with starting online sellers, but we recommend contacting them and asking them what their specific requirements are.
