Advice on how to register a business in the UK

The title explains it pretty well. I need help figuring out exactly how to register my business. Ive been looking around at various government sites, but Id like a simplified version of what Im reading. Any help would be great. Cheers!

You must register your business at Companies House if it is a limited company. You will need to provide several documents, a registered company address, the director’s address, the secretary’s address to Companies House and Articles of Incorporation. To check if the name of your business is being used already in the UK, go to A New Business.

There are several types of business structures: sole traders, partnerships, unincorporated associations and incorporated companies. The last one is completely different from the others because it has shareholders and directors.

Once you are registered with Companies House, it will inform HMRC, who will then send you an Introductory Packet. This will outline for you how your business should register for the Corporation Tax. You should fill out the Corporation Tax within three months of receiving the packet.

This sounds simple enough, but I am very busy right now getting my business running smoothly. What kind of information does HMRC ask for on the Corporation Tax form? Is there someone who could help me with this process?

HMRC asks basic questions about your business such as your registered company name, number and address you submitted to Companies House. You must explain what trade or profession your business carries out, the date on which you will start your accounting year, and the names and addresses of each director.

Even if you have already given HMRC this information when filling out forms pertaining to other taxes, you must submit it to them again. If you do not receive your packet from HMRC after registering with Companies House, you can download the forms on the HMRC Corporation Tax website.

HMRC allows businesses to hire accountants and tax agents to help file for a Corporation Tax. If you choose to do this, make sure you notify HMRC. There is an online authorization process to do this.

I did not know I had to register my company for a Corporation Tax. I remember getting paperwork from HMRC, but I did not pay much attention to it. What will happen if I do not register my limited company within the three month period?

Unfortunately, if you do not register your business with Companies House and file for a Corporation Tax with HMRC within the allowed three month period, your inaction to register will be considered a criminal offence.

If you are about to go over the registration due date, you may want to consider changing your business from a limited company to a sole tradership. You will not have to pay fees and many wholesalers will still consider you a legitimate trader.
