Shoes Purchasing and Shipping from China to UK - Newbie Needs Shipping Information and Guidance

After reading many threads, I am still really confused about shipping. Please, could someone clarify the following to me as Im very new to this.

I am thinking of purchasing an order about 2000 pairs of shoes from China and sell them in the United Kingdom.

      1. Do I need to arrange my own shipping after I made an initial payment from Chinese mainland wholesalers?

      2. What does the following details means from wholesalers website with regards to the product?

      Delivery Details:

      FOB Port:
      Xiamen

      Lead Time:
      25 - 40 days

      3. Please advise, which shipment method would be the cheapest?

      4. Do I need a sales tax permit, prior to approaching wholesalers?

      5. IE code, do I need this too?

Also when the products arrive to one of the ports in the UK, how do I go about transporting it to my site?

Thank you in advance for your help.

      Hi Vegan 34,

I have included your whole post because you have many questions and I will answer them in order.

1.You could ask your supplier to quote you on a door to door basis, but probably your best move would be to ask a UK freight forwarder to quote a delivered price for you. WARNING every quote must be fully detailed and in writing. You need to be able to tell your freight forwarder the total weight, number of packages, and dimensions of the packages. Ask the supplier for these details.

      2. Delivery details - FOB Port Xiamen means they will deliver to the port of Xiamen. They will be responsible for all charges and risk until the goods have been loaded on board a vessel there. Lead time means the length of time after order confirmation and payment of any deposit required it should take before they will despatch the goods. That date is not guaranteed and this can be of vital importance if you are paying by Letter of Credit. For that you do need a guaranteed date and it is not a good idea to make the deadline too short.

      3. Shipment method economy would depend on various factors and you should take into account the opportunity cost. That is the cost to you of financing the shipment for the long period it will be in transit by sea. It may be that air freight could prove more economical because you do not have to pay interest for such a long period (if financing the L/C). Dimensions and weight of the total shipment could affect your choice. Ask your freight forwarder to quote options.

      4. Overseas wholesalers or manufacturers are not interested in your tax status. If you are going to be below the VAT threshold you do not need to register for VAT just to be an importer.

      5. The IE code is an Indian requirement, not UK. You will need an EORI number, which is simply a number that will always be used to identify your business for Customs purposes whenever you receive a shipment. Your freight forwarder can arrange it for you.

Your freight forwarder should also include delivery to your premises in the quote.

Before you proceed much further, why not consider buying direct from the factory rather than paying possibly a lot more to buy from a wholesaler? You would have no trouble getting a genuine manufacturer to supply 2000 pairs of shoes provided they are not your own design.

What I have written above is just a starting point, I explain everything in detail in 31 pages in my book. You may choose to go it alone as many people do, but you may appreciate the guidance that my 22 years of importing experience can provide.

Finally, you must do your due diligence before parting with any money. Are you sure of the credentials of the supplier? Do they have a website with address details and a telephone number area code that corresponds with the postal code for the address? Do they use free email addresses? Do they ask for payment via Western Union? These are just a few of the questions you should answer for yourself.
