Shipping options importing from China to Australia - Courier vs Freight forwarder

      Hello guys,

I am looking to ship for the first time a possible 'one off' 20ft container or part thereof from Shanghai China to Melbourne Australia. Im am trying to find all possible options for making this happen. A shipping handler is the obvious choice, but I'm wondering if I may have other cheaper options available to me?

I would like to keep the possibility of starting an on going business relationship with the right company if things go well.

Anyones help would be greatly appreciated

      Thanks

      Hi Tim,

      Welcome to Wholesale Forum

The cheapest way to ship from China to Australia is by sea freight. You can either choose to arrange for shipping yourself by choosing a courier or hire shipping agent / freight forwarder to consign your shipment. You should get a shipping quote for your shipment from both a shipping courier and freight forwarding company to see which offers the cheapest solution. Your final cost is going to depend on the extra services you choose to have included.

To find shipping couriers from all over the world, have a look at the following thread:A freight forwarder can consolidate your order with those from other buyers importing into Australia, and are also able to find the best and cheapest shipping route and therefore decrease your total shipping charges. A freight forwarder will also take care of all the shipping documents required to import your goods into Australia.

Most Australian licensed customs brokers who offer similar services now work for freight forwarders. Have a look at the following link to find Australian freight forwarding companies:To learn more about freight forwarders you should have a look at the following threads:Instead of you freight forwarder actually taking care of the wholesale shipping process, you can also choose to be advised by them before continuing to import these goods yourself.

Finally you should consider that there might be Australian importers of the same products you are thinking of importing. You should compare the importers price with that of importing these goods yourself.

      Hope this helps

Another Aussie! Welcome to the forum.

Okay so a freight forwarder can help in a number of ways... They can get better shipping rates with container companies because they have the buying power and order a lot through either Maersk or China shipping. You will save $$ by going through a good shipping agent.

Also logistics wise they can sort out the freight, unloading costs and keep them low for you too.

I wouldn't use a courier or try to do this yourself especially if it's your first time. Too much of a headache.

      Hope this helps!

If you plan to import 20ft container then sea freight will be cheaper option. Our customers in Sydney usually get container in 15 days which is reasonable transit time. What you need to do next is to find some good freight forwarder (either in China or In Australia) to handle shipment. Once shipment reaches destination port you may need to engage customs broker or customs clearing agent to clear customs in Australia.

It is better to use a forwarder company if that is 20ft container or more. Sure, they can get good ratings and do all the paperwork. You can search such kind of forwarder company in your country, most of them have a good relationship with the forwarder in China. Another choice is to find directly those companies in China. But, it is safer to use first choice, as you can control everything easily.
