Shipping from China to UK, need advice - Courier or forwarder, documents and charges

      Hi guys,

I am a newbie both on the forum and to business and I need some advice on shipping from China (Shenzhen) to the UK (door to door). The products that I am bringing will be around 30kg. I know how much duty and VAT will be. I need to find out the following:

1- should I be using a courier company like DHL, FedEx etc or opt for a Chinese forwarder? Or are there any other options?

2- what other charges should I expect in the UK for the 30kg? How much roughly?

3- any recommendation for a cheap courier company/forwarder.

4- what documents do I need apart from the invoice?

I am not sure what else to ask!!! Any further advice will be much appreciated.

      Thanks,

      AJ

It depends on which incoterms you agreed with your supplier in China.

If you bought ex works (EXW): I suggest you take any big courier service for the beginning, to handle the whole process door to door (including customs clearance).

If you bought CIF or CFR: the supplier is responsable for the transportation cost and you just pay the customs clearance.

An additional document could be a certificate of origin, which can give you a better duty rate, but that depends on the product you will import.

1.you need to choose what way to deliver your goods, such as by air, by sea.
2.If you need goods to be delivered by air, you may use DHL, or Fedex.
3.If you are looking for cheap options, you'd better go by chinese forwarder.
      4. You'd better find an import and export company to handle all your documents.

A 30kg shipment can be shipped by air transport, it is cheaper than a courier, just inquire a forwarder at your side about which documents you need to prepare, and inform you supplier to submit these documents.

For 30 Kgs shipment it is better that you use DHL/Fedex as they will pick up from supplier and delivery to your address custom cleared. If you use normal air freight then airline will charge you for minimum 45 Kgs in addition

      1. you may have to pay some charges at destination
      2. Get it custom cleared by yourself or using a customs borker

More often paying all those additional charges outweighs advantage of cheap freight. It is better you get quote from some air freight company to compare. One more thing, DHL or Fedex normally give discount on their published prices so better ask your supplier to find out if he can get cheaper price. Normally you will need invoice and packing list only unless there is product specific requirement of additional document from UK customs.
