Getting a shipping agent - Lowering Risk of Importing

Hi all, Im going to begin having products shipped from China and I understand there are quite a few costs associated with this process. Im in the UK. I read somewhere that it is easier and/or less risk involved to just go through a shipping agent, but I have no idea what a shipping agent actually is. Id really appreciate it if someone could clear up the purpose behind having a shipping agent and what exactly such a person would do for me. Thanks in advance!

Here are a few things shipping agents will do to lower the risk of importing from an other country.

      A shipping agent will:

      1. Assist with shipments by determining the appropriate route and organizing all the necessary paperwork for the client.

      2. Schedule shipment pick up, arranging for its transportation to the loading platform.

      3. Maintenance of records for each shipment, including but not limited to the type, weight, destination and date for each shipment.

      4. Note any damaged or missing items.

      5. Establish shipping costs for cargo, as well as any other appropriate charges.

      6. Make certain that international shipments include the appropriate customs paperwork.

      7. Respond to any customer questions regarding the status of shipments, and also tracking of cargo electronically.

Overall, I’d say your risk is considerably lowered using a shipping agent because they are very familiar with the paperwork and charges that need to be taken care of for shipments coming from another country and due to the fact that they deal with this sort of thing on a daily basis. Also, consider that they keep good documentation of the comings and goings of all of this, which is always a good thing to have on hand.

That information is all well and good, but how do I obtain a good shipping agent? I would like to hire one on and I’m not real particular about the cost, I just want my shipments to be handled by a professional and have that part of my business out of my hair, so to speak.

There are many companies in the UK that provide shipping agents, also known as freight forwarders. I recommend using Google to search for shipping agents in your area and doing some research on your own before committing to a particular company, however it is a fairly simple process and can be started online via the company website you choose to go with.

Reply: Actually, there are many freight forwarders in the place of your goods (China)and your country(UK). They are specialized in internaional transportion. You can find a freight forwarder either in China or in UK as your shipping agent. Normally you may think a freight forwarder in your end is more trustworthy than one in China. What I want to say is that finding a agent in China will low you transportation cost. The thing is you should communicate with him/her, and prove he/she is trustful.
