Paypal Buyer Protection - When Does Paypal Protect Me As A Buyer?

Hey! I am planning to buy some stuff online for the first time. I heard about PayPal. Can someone help me understand how will PayPal protect me as a buyer in case of any goof up in the process? Thanks.

Sure. As you might know PayPal is a subsidiary of eBay. So if you intend to buy something from eBay, then PayPal is a good choice. Not just eBay but you can use PayPal for many other online stores. It offers buyer protection through its Buyer Protection Policy that can be used for any online purchase transactions. The approach is:

Insurance for eBay purchase: This is for eBay buyers exclusively. If a buyer does not receive the product or receives some product not actually described by the seller, PayPal refunds the total amount of the product as well as the shipping fee, if any, paid by the buyer to eBay.

Protection for non-eBay buyers: For payments made to other online merchants (verified by PayPal), a buyer can now resolve any dispute due to a faulty product or non delivery of the product directly with the seller.

Protection from theft and fraud: PayPal helps the buyers track their payments by sending emails for every transaction. In case of any issue, the customer service or PayPal Security Center helps the buyer resolve it.

So are there any specific types of issues that are resolved by PayPal for the buyers?

Yes, the issues for buyers are categorized into two programs:

PayPal Buyer Complaint Policy: This is for all the items purchased by a buyer from any online merchant including eBay.
PayPal Buyer Protection: This is for some eligible items purchased on eBay.

The types of problems that are covered through these programs are as follows:

      • When the product received by a buyer is Significantly Not as Described (SNAD)
      • When the buyer does not receive an item at all (INR)

Hi! I was just wondering if there is some kind of eligibility criteria for a buyer to be protected by PayPal. If yes, can somebody explain that?

Yes indeed there is an eligibility criterion for eBay buyers within PayPal Buyer Protection program. The requirements to meet the criterion are:

You have to use PayPal to purchase an item on eBay.
The payment should be sent to the eBay seller through Pay Now button or eBay invoice.
The buyer should make the full payment for an item at one go.
The PayPal account should have a good history.
In case of a dispute, the buyer should open a dispute 45 days from making a payment and then follow the online dispute resolution process.

How will I know whether the item that I am buying is eligible under PayPal Buyer Protection program or not? Any input?

When you see a listing on eBay, always check for either a PayPal or eBay buyer protection message. If the item has that message and you as a buyer fulfill the eligibility criterion, then you are protected under PayPal Buyer Protection program. The message usually appears on the top part of the listing. If the message is missing from an item, then it will not be covered under the program.
