I am Chinese and to tell you the truth most of McJennings's words are correct, but not all :-)
Frankly , many chinese suppliers are looking for Western Union as it is one swift transfer term and also very convenient . But you can't judge they are cheat if they want you to make the payment by Western Union.
I don't agree with McJennings' last opinion, don't believe too low prices who are not in the line of market. You should never see the cheap prices, but should pay attention to their credit, services and quality. Basically, every product has its market price, when you come across one supplier who provides you very cheap prices you should pay special attention. If it is necessary, you can visit the supplier or hire 3rd party, or even ask your good suppliers or friends to investigate this supplier.
Anyway, scammers don't just exist in China, every market and every country has them. So be careful when you do business with any new suppliers.
Good luck to you.

Try to use Paypal it will protect your purchase.
I am paying 10% for my merchandise in China paying with Paypal, its like an Insurance.

I think hiring a third party for sourcing who can verify the legitimacy of the supplier to some level and also hiring a inspection company to do a pre or post production so you know they are actual making your goods to your specification. I would advise against using Western Union no matter how easy it is for your supplier. Use a method that you are insured for such as credit card or paypal.
Hope it helps.

Hey,
McJennings is correct.
I would like to share few references to find reliable suppliers in China:
1. year or establishment
2. b2b platform with verification
3. google map the location
4. certification approved
5. if needed, hunting an inspection company
6. reliable logistics company
7. double check payment, esp when the account is changed, sometimes people's email id is stolen
etc
And also take business as business, don't be emotional.
