I know my clothes brands but am not so sure about how to spot a fake designer handbag. Anybody has any ideas, tips or advice.

Have you considered going to the company website and reading up? They usually give you very minute details on how to distinguish between a real and fake designer handbag.

But for starters you should inspect the quality of the stitching. That is usually a dead giveaway. Any broken stitches, uneven stitching or different colors than what is on the design means the bag is a fake.

Even if the outside stitch passes muster, look inside – fake bags have stitching that is rarely aesthetic or even good-looking.

Hi. Not many people can make out a real from a fake designer handbag just by looking on the outside. What you should do is look at the insides.

While these cheats often do a good job on the outside, they get lazy by the time they reach the inside part. Bad quality plasticky material, bad stitching and shoddy designing just scream fake. Sometimes they just stick the lining on not bothering with stitches.

I can tell a fake designer handbag just from the outside. The quality and feel of the leather is so different. Plus you should focus on the logo. Most cases the logo gives the fake away; either the size is wrong or it has been printed on instead of being engraved.

It’s really a question of how much time you spend looking at the real thing. If it’s a fake designer handbag, something will just be amiss..Wrong somehow.

Most original designer bags come with packaging intact – something called a dust bag. The very fact that there is a package missing should alert you. The idea is to protect the bag from any scratch or misuse.

Also check for the tag or authenticity card that accompanies most high end merchandise. Most have numbers or even year of production.

90% fakes have a lot of issues with bag color, discolorations, scratches. They have worse production quality than mid line labels because they are made in illegal sweat shops in some dingy lane.

Only very few, the remaining 10%, need to be bothered with. They can cause real confusion because the manufacturers often use the same suppliers and material as the original.

The reason they are priced so attractively is because these guys save on the branding and advertising expenses that the big guys do.

What about serial numbers. Try and see if there is some kind of magnetic tag or serial number. That usually means it’s real and not a fake designer handbag.

In the worst case, take it to an authorized retailer. They will be able to tell for sure.

Just thought some more. Check to see the weight of the bag. Most high end bags are pretty heavy on account of the good quality leather and fittings used.

Also I wanted to add on the logo thing I mean you can just sense a real creation by the way the artist has positioned it. Logos on fakes look totally tacky, cut sometimes, placed at an angle and other such bloopers.

Zippers and handles on a fake designer handbag fall apart after a couple of months. Not something you can judge straightaway but time tells.

Plus zippers also have the brand logo – not something that is easy to duplicate.

If there is a `made in china’ kind of tag, you could also figure out if the bag is an original or not. But then you need to know where the company actually gets its bags manufactured. These days, there is really no telling.

Cheap screws instead of polished rivets in a fake designer handbag.
