I guess it depends on what category you’re looking at. There are supplements for nutrition, weight loss/feast replacement, building muscle, energy builders, endurance, and then, of course there are vitamins. What is your focus?

MusclePharm is one company to look out for. Their brand just made it into the top 10 list of most popular supplements on the bodybuilding.com site, which is quite impressive if you consider that there are over 500 supplement companies in the US alone.

Whey protein is one of the more sought after products for building muscle, and Gold Standard is probably one of the best selling brands of whey. 4Ever Fit is pretty popular too. I would consider AllMax high on the list of top whey products too.

The whey protein brands you list are certainly popular for a reason. They are brands that have been on the market for a while, tried and tested, and they pass that test. I would also put CytoSport on that list, Met-Rx and EAS.

For vitamins, I would vote for Optimum. It’s a top brand for men’s and women’s vitamins.

I’ve heard that BSN and CytoSport also have popular whey products, as well as protein products in general. Is that true?

I agree. We can’t leave those two brands out of the race. Definitely solid products.

I think vitamins are a hard one to categorize, because some people look for a straight multi-vitamin while others are looking for specific things, like a green tablet or coenzyme Q10. An athlete looks for something entirely different from their vitamin than the average person, which is different from children’s vitamin.

Some trusted brands are NOW, Living Green, or Nature’s Plus. I would add GNC to that list.

I’m also interested in muscle builders. What should I look for there?

No-Xplode is one particular product, made by BSN, that is h-o-t. Everyone wants this supplement. That’s probably because it won the award for Nitric Oxide supplement of the year in 2010. It also targets several categories, focus, performance, endurance and strength, making it a good all-in-one supplement.

Others to look for are Sci-Fit by Nitrox, and NO Sn4 form GNT.

BSN is probably tops for me, but Universal also carries a solid product with their “Animal Stak 2”. Athletes flock to this stuff. It’s definitely an open market.

I agree. Even GNCs sales compete with BSN, although GNCs muscle builders are good too. The thing about GNC is that their salespeople are well trained and know how to guide customers to the right product. Because customers can get face to face with them, it increases their trust factor, as well as getting product selection right the first time.
