Very good question! It is essential to know which products sell on eBay if you want to make eBay selling a success. The same applies to online selling, and any type of reselling. Know your target market, what they want, and how to reach them.

In depth research is really essential to identify the products for which both demand and margins are high. There are various sources that can help you in this process, for example:

      1. eBay Pulse: You can get information on the most popular searches by category through eBay Pulse. This will help you identify the products in your niche that have a high demand. For more information on this, you should visit eBay Pulse.

      2. eBay Seller’s Central: You could get information related to the most popular products and categories every month through eBay seller’s central. It also informs you about the items that ebay will be promoting in the coming months. You could list your items accordingly for greater visibility.

      3. eBay Marketplace Research: This is a paid service that gives you information about the selling trends, average bids for a product, and average bid price for a product. You could get all the data regarding completed auctions, which could help you decide what you want to sell, how, and at what prices.

      4. Terapeak: This is The market research tool for eBay. It helps you identify the products that are selling the most on eBay, the profit potential of each one of them, but also how to best list your products for maximum profits: when to list them, where to list them, how to list them.

You could get the data regarding closed auctions, who the top-sellers on eBay are, and what products they are selling. Not only this, this marketing tool is so powerful that it helps you in analyzing the marketing and selling strategies of power sellers. All this data could immensely help you decide what products to sell, when to sell them for big profits, how to sell them and so on.

This is one of the most common questions that most eBay sellers ask. People all over, seem to ask this question; what products they should sell for quick and huge profits?

When I started selling on eBay, my sales were very slow. I also used to think about what to sell for good profits as well as revenues.

Now, I’m using Terapeak and my sales have gone through the roof in a very short time. I think that hardwork is not the only substitute for making money. You should work smart. It’s important for you to know what sells on eBay and depending on that research you could find the most profitable products.

Terapeak has helped me realize that it’s important to keep churning your product portfolio. I mean to say that you should decide what products to sell depending on the seasonal demand. The demand of products keeps fluctuating with season. For example, during Christmas and the wedding season, you’ll find a sudden rise in demand for home-appliances, digicams, and gift-baskets.

Terapeak is a nice marketing research software, but I think it’s expensive.

You could also check the “Want it Now” section on eBay to find out the items that the buyers are actively looking for. In this section, the buyers place a request for items that they are not able to find anywhere else. You could check such requests by entering keywords related to the items you are reselling. If any buyer’s request matches with the items that you’ve already listed on eBay or that you have available for resale, you can reply to the buyer by submitting your offer. Just another way to move your inventory faster.

Any tips for analyzing the data? I mean, if a product is on the most searched list, should I sell it or are there some other criteria to determine what I should sell?

No, the most searched item need not be the right product to sell. There are many other factors that should be taken into consideration. Here are some steps that you should follow for determining the right products to sell.

      1. First, using the eBay marketing and selling research tools, you should get information about the most popular categories.
      2. Find who is listing their products in those categories. Do you find that most of the sellers in those categories are power sellers?
      3. What products are listed in those categories? How many listings are there for those products?
      4. Find the number of bids received by each listing.
      5. Find the average price at which those products are sold.

Once you have information about the hottest selling products and their average price, you should be able to determine what the wholesale prices of those products should be for you to make a profit. Account for eBay fees.

Don't just sell products that are in high demand. If the supply is also high, margins will be tight. Instead, aim for products with the highest profitability (ideally high demand and low supply). Be careful that high profitability can either mean a high % profit margin, or a high monetary value. For example, you could sell a product that costs you $1 at $3 (a 200% profit margin) or you could sell a product that costs you $50 at $75 (a 50% profit margin but a higher $ monetary value). It's up to you which strategy you choose, high volume and low monetary value, or lower volume but higher monetary value per order.

Great tips…but I feel, such extensive research on each category is not possible. You could decide some niche areas and then research them. For example, if you are interested in electronics, then you could find whether iphones are hot or laptops or mp3s. Once you know about the most popular sub-category, you should check the models that are faring well in that sub-category. Like, if mp3 players are hot picks, check which models are really doing well? This research will help you find the electronic products that sell on eBay.
