Fixing and Reselling Game consoles - Is it a Profitable Niche

I always fix my friends’ game consoles when they are malfunctioning. I was wondering if I could make money buying broken consoles, fixing them up, and reselling them.

You can make a profit fixing and reselling game consoles if you do it well. There are a lot of people fixing and reselling game consoles. These consoles often end up breaking again because they are only patch repaired. You will have to truly fix the problems with the consoles you are selling so that they are not returned to you, costing you more money.

Also, you must compare the cost of parts and tools to fix the consoles with the profit you might make from the repaired consoles. Look at what consoles are going for on eBay and Amazon and plan on selling your game consoles at the same or competitive prices.

The profits that you might make from repairing and reselling consoles would be minor. You would want to do it as a hobby or a part time job, but definitely not as a full time, self-employed job. Right now, new consoles are so cheap that people have a good chance of opting to buy a new console rather than buy a repaired one for the same, or close to the same, price.

In addition to your console repair side business, you could also sell parts. If you order a part wholesale to repair a console, it will be cheaper than buying it retail. You could then sell the rest of the wholesale parts you did not use for the repair at retail price and make a profit.

My opinion would be that you can’t make much money out of repairing game consoles anymore. There is so much information online and so many repair books for sale that anyone could, and is, learning to do it.

It is true that there is quite a lot of information on repairing game consoles out on the Internet and tons of manuals on the subject. A lot of people are taking advantage of this information and console repair can no longer be considered a niche market.

If you want to be successful, start local. It is great if you are already fixing your friends’ consoles, but move on to the community at large. Place some free advertisements locally about your services. Have your friends help you spread the word that you are buying broken game consoles and selling repaired ones.

I think you can earn money from repairing consoles, but I am not sure about re-selling how good of a profit you can make. Unless you drastically undercut the price of a new console, I think most people will go for a new console under warranty instead of a repaired.

      Mariasuper,

One way to help ensure you build a profitable model for refurbishing gaming consoles is to create a simple testing process that sorts each console into 3 separate grades based on operational & cosmetic condition, e.g. Grade 1, 2, 3.

In the Grade 1 category you would only put the consoles in the best condition, which would be the ones that would be the easiest and most efficient to refurbish. You would put the consoles in the poorest condition in your Grade 3 category and only invest a small amount of time to refurbish maybe a few small aspects to the consoles functionality. Product somewhere in between would obviously go into your Grade 2 category.

Then when you merchandise and sell the refurbished units, simply make sure you are extremely clear with your buyers about the specific condition they can expect the product to be in before the point of sale, for each Grade you create.

In this way you're investing more time only on the consoles with the highest potential resale value that will be the easiest to fix. Efficiency in sorting and doing the refurbishing is where your profit lies.

I hope that is somewhat helpful. We have some examples of grading refurbished gaming consoles that can help you understand one way of approaching this.

      All the best!

      - TL

If you have some good skills, I think you got a good chance here. There are so many gamers out there these days. This means that there will be so many broken consoles as well. So, I'm guessing not a bad idea...

Oh, if you can fix it, then you can sell it to China. But your price must be low, then you will have a big market in China.
