Search Engine Optimization is a way to get your website to the top of the search engine results page (SERP) and get the best exposure. It means working with keywords relevant to your website to make it appealing to search engine spiders so they will increase your site’s ratings.

When your website is SEO optimized, it means that the search engine will elevate it on its list of “attractive” websites, according to the search words that a user puts into the search box on Google, Bing or Yahoo search, etc.

In order to get at the top of that list, Google has produced a list of the most common keywords that a user could potentially use to get results about a particular search topic.

Keep in mind, though, that you need to use very specific keywords that are more relevant to your site. If you sell wholesale Quicksilver shirts and accessories, then you need to put as one of your key phrases “wholesale Quicksilver shirts” and “wholesale Quicksilver accessories” as well as several other variations on those keywords.

After you derive the keywords most applicable to your site, you would then take those keywords and put them in the titles of your pages, the “meta” description and any articles or information you have on the site as well.

A title is simply the heading that you give a page. It’s what you see at the top of the window, above the URL toolbar.

The Meta description is the description that a page, article or listing has. The description is usually about 90 characters (not words) in length. Most of the time the Meta description shows up directly underneath the title in an SERP.

If I have a page listing a particular item, that page should also include those keywords relevant to that item, like in a product description.

SEO friendly keywords, HTML code (the title and meta description) and web copy are used in general to develop the following aspects of a website to be included in search results for those terms:

      • Shopping carts
      • Website design
      • Content
      • Menus
      • Videos
      • Images

Because of constantly evolving search engine algorithms created by computer engineers, search engine spiders are much more readily able to search for more targeted results that contain not only the relevant keywords typed into the search bar, but results that are actually helpful to a user and not just spam. Search engines today weed out websites that are blatantly stuffed with keywords.

The search engine spiders will return results that are most “relevant” to the keyword strength. In doing so, search engines take into account keywords, hyperlinks, Meta tags, and headings. Google’s search engine functions allow for personalization in searches, potentially ranking a page differently, depending on each user’s search history.

Basically, you can use SEO to get better visibility for your website or web page and turn up more frequently in searches made by users.

You talk about keyword stuffing. Can you give an example?

If you want an example of a site utterly stuffed with keywords, just look at this SERP: “nike wholesale”. Click on the first website and you’ll have a perfect example of SEO gone wrong. The site doesn’t make any sense, there is no real content, and once Google realizes that the site is simply just a landing page with no utility, they will ban the site and it will never come up on an SERP again, at least not from Google.
