Revenue is the goal. Traffic is not a business outcome, so it is largely irrelevant to any metric of business performance.

Rankings lead to traffic which, if you are positioned around targeted keywords, will translate into conversions & revenue. Revenue is usually the ultimate goal of SEO, but there are leading sub-goals that help get you there. If you are a site that generates revenue based on ad sales, the goal of SEO is actually traffic, since that traffic is ultimately what helps build value to 3rd party advertisers. But even in this case, SEO is helping you generate revenue.

For small businesses, it is generally smarter to pick a specific keyword group and target a long-tail family of keyword phrases related to that keyword. This niched approach helps ensure you aren't wasting your SEO juice trying to compete with massive competitors that you won't ever over-take.

      Hope that helps!

i agree, before you do SEO for any site, you must have a solid business model, worst thing that can happen to you is getting a lot of traffic and no mean to monetize / convert it.

Certainly number five, the ultimate goal of any SEO is to draw more traffic to your website.

Like every part of SEO, if we don’t begin our process with effective Keyword Research, we could end up spending an extraordinary amount of time fighting a fight that we could very well never win.

Let me give a quick analogy. You have a young 15 year old boxer… big kid… a little uncoordinated… but very strong. Dad takes him to the local gym one day… and the kid wanders over to the heavy bag… straps on some gloves and starts beating on it. The club manager takes notice that this kid is strong as heck with a killer left hook… wow.

Manager walks up to dad and says… “hey… give me your kid to train and I will make him a world champion.” Dad… being a bit naive and even more greedy… says “he’s yours!”

So… two months later… with a little bit of footwork… and a bit more bag work… this skilled manager… through friends of friends of friends… arranges a fight for our young 15 year old with Mike Tyson.

So, you tell me… what happens in the first round of that fight? Does the kid leave on a stretcher… or worse?

The kid doesn’t stand a chance… yet he goes after the big dogs… a horrible and debilitating mistake.

SEO is no different… and I have used this analogy for years. If you try to SEO for keywords that have too much competition… you will find yourself in a never ending battle… one that you will never win.

Conversely, if you do proper keyword research… and identify a group of keywords that you can immediately begin ranking for… you then can capitalize on this traffic… and link relativity… and continue to build on these keywords… driving more traffic to your site.

Moral of the story… it all begins with proper keyword research… start out slow and with a very specific plan.

The main purpose of SEO is to rank high for those buyer keywords, increase the CTR, increase the conversion, increase the sale~
