Essentially, cross-promotion is when two companies, individuals, sites, etc. with the same target audience partner for marketing purposes. There are a couple of advantages to doing cross promos:

      ● With another company backing you, your company boosts its credibility. Your partner serves as a “referral” of sorts. When customers see that another company trusts you enough to put their name on your site, that ingrains trust with consumers, which is always good!

      ● It’s cost-effective. Cross promos reduce your overall marketing costs because the load is shared between two parties. Basically you’re splitting the work and resources between two businesses, but you get double the return on investment.

      ● Cross promotion allows you to really drill down and target a specific audience, and do it in new ways. You’re reaching a wider audience and you’re doing it in a new way, which will build interest in your brand.

The most common online promotion you see is banner ads - or sites sharing links to partner sites. But there are a lot of other ways to do it. Make sense?

I think so, yeah. How do I go about setting one up though? I can’t just put someone’s banner on my site, can I?

You’re likely gonna have to sell whoever you want to partner with on the idea

Because its mutually beneficial, I would think that selling a cross promotion to another site shouldnt be that tough of a sale though.

Well, you still need to make sure youre targeting the right partner site, first of all. Second you also need to present several ideas beyond just throwing a banner ad up on your site if you want to really pique their interest.

Can you think of some other ideas that I could use? I have a particular site in mind, but they’re a lot bigger than I am so I’m not sure if they’d want to even work with me

Do your homework on them before approaching - keep up with what theyre doing on other sites like Facebook or Twitter, their blog if they have one. Begin with an introductory e-mail and make comments on their postings before launching into the hard sale - test the waters to see how responsive they are to you.

Are in-person approaches a bad idea? Will that seem too pushy maybe?

If you can afford an in-person approach, I dont see why it would hurt your chances. Be sure to keep the balance between persistent and pushy in check - if you have a unique idea but the timing is not right for your partnership target, dont bully them into a partnership.
