Twitter for Business - Using Twitter for Business

Sometime this year, Twitter will launch an assortment of features for businesses, some already enabled on a couple of testing accounts. Lately, I have peered at some of the beta tools, and as a result I have thought of some ideas on how they could be used by small businesses.

      Contribution margins

One of the neatest features you’ll see is the “Contributors”. I have known about for a couple of months, and fundamentally it does the same as other third-party applications: it allows several users to update a single account without sharing the login information.

Yes, I know the benefits of letting your personnel update your business account, the idea is very important from a security point of view. It means you don’t have to give out your passwords, which, up to this time left your accounts vulnerable to hacking, employee errors, and the constant routine of changing passwords.

When Twitter finally adds the “Contributors,” you can add or remove permissions in a couple of clicks.

      Official status

A year ago, Twitter finally added the “Verified Accounts,” which lets actors, authors, and politicians to brand their account with an official badge to alert the public of its authenticity.

Soon, those features will be offered to businesses, permitting them to authenticate their identity so consumers know they are dealing with the right people. Just like their famous counterparts, business accounts will display a “Verified Account” on their profile.

      I'm talking to you

One of the most unique changes to Twitter business accounts is the adage of direct messaging from all as opposed to just your followers. When you enable it, your customers will never have to reply with @name to get in touch with you. You now have the power to send direct messages, which means your responses do not have to be public and visible to the world. This feature will forever alter the way you’ll interact with your Twitter customers.

Price still needs to be officially set in stone when using Twitter business accounts, but the guys at Twitter headquarters are monitoring the service and designing to solve any type of need.

You should expect every business to massively adopt the new features, so start brewing your thoughts to find all the right techniques when they are available to the masses.

Many people already use Twitter for their business rather than just having a personal account with them (same with Facebook). For those who already have an account setup it would be interesting to know if they will be able to merge the old account towards a newer one for these "extras" or if people are going to lose their accounts and need to start all over again.

You can use Twitter's feed option to export your tweets from one account into the other. I am not aware of a merging option, yet.

They use demographic targeting. As an advertiser, you can specify what type of demographic you want to target your keywords to. Filters include:

      - Location
      - Age
      - Birthday
      - Sex
      - Education
      - Workplaces
      - Relationship
      - Interested in
      - Languages
      - Connections
      - Friends of connections

Facebook will then offer suggestions and an estimate number of people your filters will be reaching.
