The idea of social media is to grow rapidly, and several organizations are trying to do just that while staying afloat in this day and age. Meanwhile, a small band of nerds are paving the way forward for the same companies of us to follow.

In the past three years, marketing via social media has become the standard, quickly moving us towards highly optimized social media programs. Here I will present several key ideas to help you build a successful social media program and how you can use it to your advantage.

Enable those around you
Itís impractical to believe that one person can handle the social media campaign of an entire company or even hire enough people to stay on top of it. In spite of that, I believe itís critical for social media marketers to change their thinking to that of an enabler. Keep in mind, social media doesnít scale as much as others. You cannot handle every bit of your social media campaign, effort or program. You have to enable those around you to do it own their own Ė thatís the key if you want to truly scale. You also have to become a consultant, an important wealth of knowledge to help the entire business run as smooth as possible.

Take the initiative.
An enthusiastic mindset is what it takes. You canít wait for those around you to keep up with you. You have to let them know and show them what is required before they ask you for anything. Having initiative and knowing the rules will lift you higher than stressful moments, where being overwhelmed by the situation is the norm.

Be a leader, not a preacher.
As your social media campaign grows more complicated, the people who fill the preacher roles will head on to the next challenge, talking about new tactics and technologies. But with the ongoing maintenance for social media programming, an entire team of program managers must emerge. You have to change your thinking caps quickly if you want to stay on top of your game. A wide range of skills is a requirement, and a program manager is in charge of resources, due dates, modeling, charts, etc. Itís a bigger responsibility than the preacher role that youíre already familiar with.

Teach your people.
Teaching those around you will save you time, so give them everything theyíll need. You should always test your employees to see how proficient they are in digital and social media. Itís very important to lay down the law, but to also provide educational opportunities for those who want to strive for more and get their hands dirty in the social media campaigns.
