Search Engine Optimization for Small Businesses

The internet has revolutionized the ways in which companies do business, but for many small business owners the World Wide Web can just seem like a tangled mess. No need to worry, though, we are here to cut through the confusion with a machete.

      What SEO Means to You

The key to driving traffic (i.e. potential customers) to website largely relies on search engine optimization (SEO). SEO, simply stated, is designing a website in a way that helps drive traffic to a website. Through SEO, the website owner can improve the page rank (PR) of the website. Page rank is where the website falls in regards to other sites that had similar words. You know the list of websites that pops up when you type something into the search bar? How well a site owner implements SEO can mean the difference between being at the top of the list and being on page 3.

      Keywords are the Key

If you are looking to drive traffic to your site, it is practical to have more than just pictures and names of the items that you offer. Consumers usually don’t search for specifics; they usually search something general. The words that are typed into the search bar are known as keywords, and it pays – quite literally – to know them.

You should make an effort to include content in your website (e.g. articles, reviews, product descriptions). The content should strategically include keywords, which will increase the likelihood match. By including articles about things related to your products, you might actually pull in some customers who were not even intending to purchase a product.

An important part of SEO is including keywords in each and every page title. A page title is the actual name of the page that appears at the top of the screen. By using a keyword in the title, you allow the search engine to find and include that page in the ranking system. It is a little more difficult to do, but it is well worth the extra effort.

There are websites you can visit to help determine which keywords or phrases will help improve your page ranking -- the best being Google’s keyword search tool. Be careful not to include too many keywords, though, as search engines will typically flag websites that appear to be just trying to include keywords for the sake of page rank.

      Link-building

Another aspect that attributes to a business’ page rank is how many other sites have links back to your website. By posting your link to related websites, there is not only an increased likelihood that someone will click on it, but it also boasts well for your business in the eyes of search engines. If your website has a lot of links back to it from respected websites, the search engine takes that into consideration when determining your rank.

The best place to start is to get your company into online directories. Directories are often visited by individuals looking for a specific good or service, so it won’t hurt you to be on them anyways. The next place to look is to related websites that cater to market related to your product. Participating in forum discussions on related subjects and including your website link will improve your ranking and get your name out there as a knowledgeable retailer. The key is to get your name out there and build a good reputation, so consider your sources. You can write your name on the walls of a thousand bathroom stalls, but I can guarantee it won’t result in a good time for your business.
