      Recession Marketing: Branding Strategy

Take a look at the signs in your own town as shops disappear and foreclosure signs pop up next door, it has made the frivolous spending consumer curb their buying habits. But marketing your business in a recession takes the spotlight off who is buying and shines it on how and why they are buying from you. Basically, all you have to do is come up with a marketing campaign that taps into this outlook, outline it, come up with tactics, and work them out.

So, if you want to know what steps you need to take in order for you to give an experience your customers will not forget, keep on reading. Here are the tips to help your brain churn out some great ideas:

      Ideas are created before motivation…
The greatest ideas do not start with a concept for new profound experiences. Instead, they appear out of consumer awareness from the endless hours of research into who they are, what they are doing, how they use the product or service, and what they would like to see from their favorite brands.

      Do not repackage, rethink…
Building universal tactics to establish a relationship with your customers does not mean randomly posting videos on YouTube for a chance to go viral. In an age where anything is possible, television is the predecessor to a much more engaging experience. You have to bring in new ideas to help your customers make your brand theirs.

Do not listen to the conversation, start it…
Apparently, most people do not want to be best buddies with your brand. If you would like to have your product or service talked about on social media sites, be the one that starts it - through intriguing experiences that keep the customer thinking about it.

      Your business has a story…
Your product or service has a history, tell it. Do not just pitch your product or service, really talk about the problem it will solve, the sense of tranquility it provides, the social status it displays, or how valuable it is. But watch out if you slowly change your company's website into another entertainment portal. In this day and age, the most insightful experiences are uplifting - friendly, copyrightable, and sharable.

      Give control away…
User-generated content is not something new (I remember it back on America's Funniest Home Videos at least 15 years ago), but it's a great way to generate some buzz. The next generation, especially male teens, seem to love to create their own YouTube videos and email them to all their friends. How can you give control away while bringing in potential buyers? Guarantee rewards for promoting your brand, instead of making fun or hating on it.

What do you have to say about it all?

I like and appreciate your ideas but in the case of this one I would like to add my experience. I have been an 'ideas' person all my life, and many of the best have started with a dawning moment of inspiration if you like. Of course you have to have the drive and ability to push it on to become something real.

So while I agree that research is vital I can't overlook the influence of those magical moments, which tend to be born from a situation where I see an opening for something additional or different. Hope this made sense!

I like this one because it emphasizes how competitive the business world is. You need to be sociable and helpful, but you need to be guarded as well. You will earn a lot of respect in the right circles if you're friendly yet firm at the same time. I've met a lot of business owners who, while having good, sound business practices, were not the most personable people in the world, and as a result, didn't get a lot of repeat business. So there is a fine line there.
