Less obvious ways to get to know what your customers need

When I think about marketing I like to utilise the usual tools but also to move beyond them. Here are some of the things I do in order to gain extra insight into what I can offer my customers.
      1. I regularly browse forums where the majority of the posters are restaurant owners, management and/or staff. This gives me a feel for current issues in the business as well as information about attitudes to their suppliers. I have never joined a site or communicated directly with the users - but it is something to consider if it feels right to you.
      2. Both myself and my staff eat out in local restaurants regularly. We do so with a critical eye. We gain contacts, build a relationship and sometimes figure out new angles based on being in the actual market area we work with.
      3. I also post on blogs ran by foodies, especially those who Yelp regularly. Again this is a good way to gain information and keep up with the opinions of diners.
