How to write a marketing plan

I just read the thread about a business plan and am really enjoying all the tips on the forum. Can someone perhaps help me understand how to write a marketing plan?

Is a marketing plan just a description of how I plan to advertise my business and product?

A marketing plan is your strategy in how to make the business succeed. Marketing plans can be 100s of pages long or just 10 pages. It all depends on the type of business and thoroughness required.

Here are the basic parts of a marketing plan:

      Purpose
o What is the business mission statement?
o Gives brief explanation of marketing plan
      o Sets target audience

      Situational analysis
      o Financial information
      o Distributor information
      o Target market

      Marketing strategy
      o What are your objectives?
o Are you going into a new market?
o What’s the status of the current market?

      Tactical programs
      o Product, pricing and distribution
o How can you reach your target market

      Budgets, implementation
o How much will marketing cost?
      o Who is in charge?

      Additional info
o This is where you would discuss any funding issues as well as problems with research

Given the above, you can see that a marketing plan just isn’t about selling a product; it’s about making your business succeed.

Marketing plans require thorough research: what’s the status of the financial market? Is your product market growing? Are distributors closing?

A marketing plan is a list of actions a business takes to market themselves and their products.

You can use a marketing plan for in-house or to raise funds for future growth.

So, in the marketing plan should I include information about banner ads, pay per click and text ads then?

Yes, those are just a few things needing to be covered by a marketing plan. You will want to research how those types of advertisements have worked in the past, what they cost and how you expect them to perform in the future.

A marketing plan needs a lot of details. How did your past marketing plans work? How can you reach a target audience?

Are you a start up business?

I am building my website now and plan to launch in the next month. That’s why I’m trying to get the marketing plan all worked out. I have a lot of ideas and information but can’t seem to piece it all together.

As a new business you will want to study how your competition markets themselves (of course you want to do this even if you are a seasoned trader too).

I would look at the bullet list that Copythat provided. If you can set up the information in that form I think you will be good.
