Conversion rates are something everyone should be concerned about; after all, it tells you how many visitors are becoming paying customers.

You need to look for conversion leaks. This is the point of your website where visitors are leaving. Here’s a few things to look for:

      • Get an analytic analysis tool (Google offers one for free)
      • Check your top landing pages
      • Figure out how people are even getting to the site (search traffic, pay per click, etc)
      • Why are visitors leaving

Once you start to analyze all this data you should be able to figure out how to fix the leaks. May be you need a better call to action or that people don’t feel secure enough on your site to buy online.

Review the analytics and test your changes. Don’t just make changes hoping for positive results.

Get Google analytics and start seeing what your most popular pages are. Then you can work on those pages and hopefully lead people to a sale.

When I look at the analytics, what exactly do I need to be looking for?

This is why people need a copywriter and analytic guru. Sometimes you can find one person who does both. You need to make sure each visitor is seeing persuasive copy that makes them feel better about whatever product/service you offer. If they are leaving before that happens, then your goal should be figuring out how to direct them there or have them land there from the beginning.

One thing to look for is the time spent on the page. Are they bouncing? Or are they looking around and then moving to another page?

Pay attention to exit pages too. Where do these occur in the conversion process – product page, shipment info, cart, etc.

There is no one fix for all conversion leaks. Each visit to the site has to be treated as a “why did they come here, where did they come here from, why did they leave” When you try to figure that out, you have a better chance of gaining a customer.

Some people aren’t going to buy something the first time they are on the site. There are those that don’t want to give any information; so, I avoid asking them to set up a free trial, account or anything similar. Instead just say that they can sign up for the newsletter. Then you have a way to get them back to your site should they leave.

I think one problem is that the landing page doesnt have any call for action. I believe this is a pay per click problem because I didnt want this to be linked to the page. Regardless, its an area I need to fix now.

It takes time to fix these issues. Every visitor and customer is unique. You can figure out one scenario but there are several more that follow. That’s why it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your web traffic.

Pay attention to your exit rates. Why are people leaving the page so suddenly? What page were they on before that one?

Quite often, it is a break in the communication. They could have thought you had one thing but instead it was another. Don’t let every exit rate get you down. Remember customers have to exit after a purchase; so, not all exits are bad. Start by focusing on the heist exit rate.

You need to instill confidence in your customer on every page. If you aren’t doing that, see if you can change the photos, copy and point of action.
