How do I make my links more effective?

Ok, so I know how to build links to my online store and the principle and reasons behind it, but I dont think I am doing that well. I keep adding more and more links, but I have not seen a corresponding increase in my rank in Google. What should I do to make my linking more effective?

Google’s innovative PageRank algorithm started out by calculating how valuable a web site is by figuring out how many other sites linked to it. But that was just the beginning. Now it has more than two hundred factors it looks at when it decides how to rank a page in its search listings.

That means, even if you have a large number of links, you may not necessarily have a high ranking in Google. This is probably what has happened to you. Below, I am going to give some ideas for improving the way you link, and hopefully improving the ranking that you have in Google searches:

      • Quantity – More is Better – I realize that you understand this, but I want to emphasize this since there may be other readers of this forum who don’t have as good of a grasp as the way SEO works as you do. More links is necessarily better.
      • Quality of Links – More links is better, but quality is also important. How good are your links? If you have lots of links to worthless websites, it will not do you much good in your Google ranking. This may have been what happened to you.
      • Keywords- Links are important, but they are not the only thing that Google looks at. When you build a site, you want to make sure that your links are things that are closely connected to your business or whatever you are doing. If your keywords are not very good or off topic, you can have all the links in the world and it will not help improve your search in the way that you want it to.
      • Location – Check and see where the links on your site are. Google knows that the more important links are on the top. The links on the bottom of the page are less important because they are less likely to be seen by someone who visits your web page. Google takes this into account and you should too. Put your most important links near the top of your web page.
      • Diluting – If your links come from a page that has millions of links on it, Google will realize that that link is less valuable. Perhaps this is another mistake that you have been making, getting links from places that already have lots of links. This will not improve your ranking in Google much.
      • Currentness – One thing that search engines look for is currentness. Is your page dealing with a hot topic? These are the kinds of things that search engines look for. They want to be the one promoting the hot new sites, sites that are buzzing with activity. Make sure the topics that your site discusses are current.

Fantastic, thank you, I thought I understood SEO, but now I know there are a lot of ways I can improve. Just one question: What do you mean that keywords won’t improve my search ranking in the way that I want it to? Doesn’t any search improvement help my ranking and is by definition good?

Great question. What I meant was that if your keywords are off topic, your rank in the search engine may improve, but it will be for the wrong searches. If you build a bunch of links with the text “click here,” then that is what you will be ranked for. But if you are selling flowers in your online store, people searching for flowers will still not be able to find you. Only people who search for “Click Here” will be able to find you. So this may improve your search ranking, but it will not help your business or drive people looking for what you are selling to you.

I know that I am not as advanced as Carol, clearly, but I was wondering if I could ask a stupid question: What does SEO mean?

The only stupid question is the one you don’t ask. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimalization. It means getting Google and other search engines to rank your website more highly, driving more traffic to your site. SEO is now a big business, especially considering the amount of sales that go on online now.
