How can I get press for my niche business?

Does anyone have any pointers on how I can get media coverage on my small business. I tend to cater to a niche market; any press at all would help me out. How do I get my name out there?

Wouldn’t it be easiest to hire a public relations firm or something of the sort?

A lot of small businesses do not have the expendable funds to hire a PR firm.

Getting PR can definitely be tricky. You are not alone, plenty of other small businesses suffer from the same problem as you. It seems that it is only the big ones that get all the media coverage. Don’t worry though, there are ways to get yourself out there without using a PR firm or spending tons of money. Just be prepared it might take a little while.

Here are some ways to get your business out there (and hopefully picked up by the media!)

      1. Make Videos- if you make youtube or other free video posting sites you can embed the videos onto your site or post them other places as well. Make sure to post your site address on the youtube video so people who stumble across your vid can check out your site too.
      2. Social Network- Use facebook, twitter, etc as much as possible. These are free tools that you can use to advertise your business.
      3. Post your own articles- There are plenty of sites such as articlealley.com that allows you to post articles about your business. You can use key words so articles about your niche market can be easily searched for!

Thanks, this definitely does seem like a good place to start, since I really don’t have the funds to hire a public relations firm as mentioned earlier.

But how would you suggest I go about trying to get a journalist or publication to write about me and my business?

Any tricks you know of regarding this?

Sure, there are a few ways you could do this. You could try writing your own press release, you could pitch your business to a journalist, or you could take a look at journalists’ queries and respond to them.

In order 2 get written about, u have to make sure that u are newsworthy. Journalists aren’t going to waste their time with every run of the mill business. If u are going to make ur own press release there are a few basic guidelines that I have found 2 be a help in my experience aside from being newsworthy.

      - make a catchy headline
      - keep it short and simple, journalists get a lot of these
      - keep it clear and easy to follow
      - don’t forget ur contact info, and links to ur site and other info about ur biz.

How do I respond to journalist’s queries? Where would I find these at? Who should I send my press releases to? How do I get these contacts??

Try out HelpaReporter.com, otherwise known as HARO. It’s free. Basically its purpose is to help out journalists who are not experts in certain fields but are looking for real experts for subject matter and help.

Once you sign up for HARO you will receive a few emails with some queries from journalists. Many of them might not be fitting for you or your business, but it is still worth going through them and responding to the ones you feel you might be good for.

As far as sending out your press releases try any of these, prweb.com, prnewswire.com, or businesswire.com. Reporters use these sites to get emails with press releases in them. Don’t get discouraged, the writers see a LOT of press releases, you may not get the response you are looking for right away. But keep sending them out.

It seems like I will have to go through a lot of third party sites to get my info out there, there is no easier way?

you could try building a ‘media list’. This will also take some time to do. Compile email addresses, and other contact information. Look for journalist information for your local publications as well as niche publications that might cater to an audience that could be potential customers for your business.

You could also use facebook and twitter to find journalists and contact them that way.

Once you build up your media list, you can send out your pitches and press releases and hope someone takes a bite!
