Are Google Adsense ads on website good for extra revenue?

Hello. I was thinking about putting google adsense up on my website to generate some extra revenue. Any thoughts for or against using adsense?

What type of site is it? A site where you sell wholesale/retail products or is it primarily an information-related site?

Adsense is really good for information-related pages that get organic traffic and don’t sell anything. But if you want the visitors to buy your own products, you may actually be distracting them from considering your product with Adsense. What google adsense does is review the actual copy of your site and puts up related ads. You may be, in fact, advertising your competitors’ websites.

I’m thinking that if the visitors are not going to buy my products, at least I can get some revenue from referring them to other sites. Does that make sense?

Yes, it is logical. And you will likely do just that, but how much can you really make? It all depends on the number of visitors you have coming to your site and how many of them click on the adsense advertisements. Websites that make good money from adsense have a lot of unique visitors and a click-through rate (CTR) of 5% or better. So if you have 100 visitors and a 5% CTR then 5 of those visitors will click on your ads. The more visitors you have, the more adsense revenue you will make.

Google pays you about half of what the advertiser paid to place the ad and google keeps the other half. The price depends on how competitive the keywords in question are.

Copythat is right. The adsense revenue model works best if you have really in depth articles about a particular topic on a blog. So if you are a prolific writer and can pump out some real content about your products, you may want to start a blog and put adsense on there. You can plug your own site and generate your own leads and generate some adsense revenue.

It’s funny, one of my competitors had adsense and I was using adwords for my product. I kept showing up on their page! I was glad to pay for those clicks.

Most people make very little using adsense. You need a ton of visitors each month - like in the 50,000+/month range.
