      A basic course on SEO

Here is a basic description of how SEO works.

Step 1: In optimizing your online store and website, you need to keep in mind the secondary keywords. If you have been messing around with some free tools provided by Googles Insights (Id recommend that you do this before reading over this little crash course), you probably already have a nice long list of secondary keywords that you think lots of your potential customers will use when they are searching for the items in your online store or on your webpage. Now, what do you want to do with them to get that traffic directed towards you?

      Heres what you can do:

Focus on one keyword per page
Keywords must be present in the Heading and Sub heading of your title
Your sites descriptions must contain keywords. The best optimized descriptions have around two hundred words. Keep in mind that your descriptions have to be interesting to your readers. These descriptions are not just for search bots, they are also for people who would be deciding whether or not to view your page or check out your online store.
      Your categories should contain keywords
Images should be named using keywords. As you know, Google gets a lot of image searches, so this is an easy and essential step. Change all the images that contain a bunch of numbers and make them into things related to the keywords that you are trying to promote.

Step 2: With that in mind, there are some other things that you should keep in mind about keywords.

Over sixty % of your search engine traffic will be driven by your secondary keywords. That means these secondary keywords are very important. Make sure to stay on top of them.
If your customer uses longer secondary keyword searchers, they tend to have a higher conversion rate.
Online stores that use optimization for secondary keywords have a five time increase in their sales after doing so.
Getting a higher position in the search results for secondary keywords is much easier than if you are trying to do it through your prime keywords. Competition for prime keywords is a lot fiercer.

The more secondary keywords that you try to optimize through your online store, the more hits your store or website is going to get. It is just that simple. First go and research on Google Insights before you continue with this basic crash course.

Step 3: Another important thing is that Google gives better rankings to active websites. This basically means that you should update your website at least once a day, or at the very worst, twice or thrice a week. Keep in mind that the more you update, the better Google will feel about ranking your website higher. Again, I know this can be hard, especially if you run an online store that does not have new products every day, or even every week, or if you simply do not have time to update regularly.

One trick I like to use when promoting a website is to simply install a simple blog. A blog is a great way for you to communicate to your customer about your product and let them know how passionate you are about the product that you are selling. If you do not like writing, that is not a problem. You can find a lot of free online articles and post them to your blog. The only thing is that you have to acknowledge that the article source is someone else and you have to put that sites url at the bottom of your post. It is better if you can write your own posts, since your customer might go to this persons website, but if you cant write, you can just borrow this persons post and give them credit. Thats fine.

Perhaps you are not a particularly tech savvy person, perhaps you are just in the business of selling things online just because you specialize in business, not because you like to be online. You may ask: How does one create their own blog? Well, dont worry, it is not that difficult. I would suggest that you use Wordpress as the software for blogging.

Wordpress is easy to install and use. They offer a ton of free plug ins which will help you automate your blog updates and deal with SEO maintenance. These plug ins also allow you to do auto-postings to your Facebook account, your Twitter account and other social groups that you ought to be using to promote your business. Plus, it is free!

Another thing that Wordpress has that is fantastic for SEO is a free plug in that will automatically source material and update your blog, meaning that you have a continuous supply of new articles that are related to the subject your website discusses or to the products that you are selling. You can also download a sweet plug in that alerts Google every day that you have posted a new article. This gives Google the impression that you are a very good blogger who is continuously updating your website. Remember, this can have a major boosting effect on your sites SEO and website rankings.

Step 4: You finally have a cool website that is SEO optimized. You are regularly updating your site and making sure to index it with Google and some of the other major search engines like Microsofts Bing.
What do you do if you are still not satisfied with your search position? Is this where those important back links come in?

What this means is that you are going to try to get your websites URL link posted on a lot of other websites that are related to your subject. The best thing would be your posts on these websites. These posts would have a title that includes some of your keywords. Your back link could be a straight forward link exchange. To do this, all you have to do is locate the links section of a website where you may find a reciprocal link program. If the website runs a forum or a blog, go ahead and create a profile which includes the URL for your online store and your email (oh yea, and your web address should be connected with your online store). Once you have created a profile featuring your online stores URL, leave replies to a post, post on an article related to your online store and try to drop your stores URL.

There is no simple way to generate back links automatically, so you may have to waste a lot of time. The best way to do this is to target the top 10 Google ranking websites that appear when you search for the keywords. Try to search for the following things:

      Your Keyword
      Your Keyword + forum
      Your keyword + blog
      Your keyword + news
      Your keyword + group
      Your keyword + image
      Your Keyword + video

Just put your keyword in there and search for these topics. If you manage to add your links to half the sites that you come up using the searches I gave above, you will do well.

Good question. Here are a few tips:

Make sure that you host your blog on your websites URL, not on some free blogging service like blogger.com. You are trying to drive traffic to your site and if you send it to blogger.com, you will be driving people away from your site and hurt your SEO.
Check to see that there is a link to your blog from your main homepage. Make sure it is in a prominent position and also check if your blog page has a link back to your homepage making it easy to go to your online store from your blog.
Make sure that your articles are related to your subject.
Make sure that many of your keywords are featured in your blog postings.
Add credit to your articles (I mentioned this before, but check to make sure you are doing this)
Make sure that you or an automated program updates your blog every day. Check for a Wordpress program that is free and does this for you.

The color is in the eye of the beholder ie the search engines.
