Airsoft BB guns can be dangerous on their own and bear a close resemblance to actual firearms which means that they can cause unnecessary panic and defensive postures by police. It is therefore important to familiarize yourself with the updated law as on date even after you go over the opinions expressed on this forum.

As per UK laws, Airsoft BB guns that are unrealistic (which means clear, translucent or brightly colored – red , orange, pink, purple, blue, green…etc) can be sold legally and nobody needs a license to own, sell or buy them provided one is over 18 years. But it is an offence to sell imitation firearms (even the unrealistic variety) to anybody less than 18 years of age; so, be sure to check the age of your buyer since you will be held accountable. It is also an offence to sell the realistic versions that come in black, silver or chrome since they look very much like the real thing viewed from a distance.

The law on the subject is pretty clear on the above and also advocates safety measures like use of safety goggles, wearing an airsoft mask, deploying the safety catch as well as ensuring suitable targets and keeping away from children. They’re all very sensible regulations to ensure your safety and that of the people around you that you should mention if you are planning to sell them. It is your responsibility to ensure that the products that you are putting in the hands of people don’t bring them and others to harm.

The above may be true for UK; in the US, there is an additional regulation as regards permitted firepower. These can however vary a bit from state to state; so do check again, if the Airsoft BB weapon is being used indoors, the firepower limitation is 300 to 350 feet per second or fps. In case, it is being used outdoors, the fps is 350 to 450.

Anything more than this can actually result in grave injury in case you hit someone rather than something. You should therefore, also keep in mind, the power of the guns that you will be dealing in and the places where they are legal.

Also, to differentiate them from the real weaponry, Airsoft BB guns are required to have an orange barrel tip which cannot be removed after purchase. It is also common for sellers to make Airsoft BB guns in clear plastic casing to help cops differentiate them from the real deal.

As regards taking them out in public, it is not allowed till your gun is in a nice glass case. You cannot carry them to your school or areas like San Francisco, Chicago, Washington D.C., New York City and even some parts of Michigan. It is a fact that carrying Airsoft BB guns can cause a lot of panic and scare which is what the laws are trying to prevent. Do mention all this on your webstore or product literature.

I don’t get this two tone guideline – Basically it says that 51% of the weapon must be a bright color. What if people who have an actual weapon paint it as per the regulation? Are they free to wave it around? I’m sure there must be something more to the law.

I know a friend in this business and he needed a license to start selling these Airsoft BB guns. Be sure to check the rule on this point. Maybe buyers don’t need it but sellers definitely do. Also, there are some select clubs whose membership allows you to carry the realistic looking version as well – possibly to airsoft sessions. You may want to look them up.

In Northern Ireland you can get thrown into prison if you are spotted in public carrying an Airsoft BB gun – even if it’s not loaded. There is a huge fine as well – I would suggest that you just forget about something so controversial. I know for a fact that you need authorization from the secretary of state for the gas cartridge BB gun. Why will UK laws be any more lenient?

In legal matters, it is not enough to know the law. One must also try and get to know the various interpretations. I would suggest seeking counsel from an actual legal authority or a seller on these issues. No point getting into trouble later on.

Plus, while you may find this to be a lucrative niche, there is really no saying what your buyers will be using it for. Do you really want to be responsible for all that? Why not sell something safer?

Wow I am in the US and we just don't have to worry about this kind of thing that much. A 16 year old can got to Walamrt and buy BB guns and Paintball guns all day long. I open carry or conceal carry (with a license) a real gun everytime I leave my house. Seems like if there are that many regulations in your area that it wouldn't be worth the trouble.

I have to agree with you there got2work especially if there is any potential for yo or your business to be held liable after the sale. I also conceal carry everywhere I go but I live in the US so this is not something I would have considered.

Under the vcra act in the uk, although two tone or clear airtsoft weapons are legal for sale,
their use in public is not..
These are only permitted on private land...

just to clarify kates message.. There is no authorization required regulation for co2 guns, these come under the same terms as long as they are off legal vcra compliant colours..
We are ukara registered retailers and have always come across all these issues..also with regards someone(seller) being responsible for someones actions after a sale..no, this is hnot the case, as long as you have followed the legal guidlines, you are not responsible for the end users actions, motives or use's

as to wishing to sell these items, its quite good business, though the profit margins are now very small and decreasing all the time as costs rise in their manufacture, taxes, and of course ever changing regulations
