Importing Products to Thailand from the US through Malaysia - Avoiding Customs Duty Charges

      Hey,

The product I want to import from the USA to Thailand is liable for customs in Thailand when it's imported from the USA, but when it's imported from Malaysia it bears 0% custom charges. The same product is liable for 0% customs in Malaysia when coming from the USA.

So is it legal to import goods from the USA to Malaysia first, then tranship them to Thailand to avoid customs? Or is it illegal?

      Hi Alex,

      Welcome to Wholesale Forum

The procedure of importing through another country is legal. If customs duty into Thailand from Malaysia is 0%, you may have found a way to decrease your total cost of importing your specific product into Thaliand. There is a consideration to make however, many custom duties are charged based on the country of origin (abbreviated as COO) of the product you are importing, also known as the country of manufacture or production. In this case your products might still be liable for customs duty upon arrival in Thailand unless you first import the parts from the US to Malaysia, assemble them in Malaysia and then import the finished manufactured product from Malaysia into Thailand.

To find out more about customs charges on your specific product, you can use the Integrated Tariff Database to search for your product specific tariff code and find more information related to your product. Have a look at the following link:Also search for your product from the following link to find out if it's completely exempt from payment of duty regardless of its country of origin:We suggest placing a small sample order which can be shipped through Malaysia to learn about the exact process and total charges involved in importing your product into Thailand.

Also evaluate the cost of using a forwarding service to forward your shipment from Malaysia and compare your total cost per unit to the cost per unit when importing directly into Thailand from the USA.

      Hope this helps

      Hey

Thanks for a very quick and informative answer. Do you by any chance know where I can find out more information about which products' custom duties are based on COO?
