How do wholesalers source books when our main distributor is not selling to them?

      Hello,

I am a publisher of books and DVDs in Germany. Browsing on Amazon.co.uk, I find our books available from many 'new' and 'used' sources. The book depository, for example, is a big wholesaler.

We receive no sales notifications from our distributor in the UK, and yet our book are available cheaper than Amazon price, from many wholesalers.

So my question is: how do they source the books if not from our main distributor? And how do they make 'used' books available? (for example, we have a brand new book, which shows 'used' copies for sale, how is that possible?)

      Very grateful for any input,

      Thank you

      Edward

      Hi Edward,

      Welcome to Wholesale Forum

The Book Depository is owned by Amazon, meaning they have access to the same supply chain as Amazon.

      1. Do you sell the English edition of your books in other countries other than the UK? They may be sourcing from distributors in those countries.

      2. When you say the price is lower, are you also accounting for shipping? Amazon UK charges between £2-£4 for shipping for Marketplace book orders.

      3. Could they be buying stock from bankrupt book shops or overstocks from book sellers?

      Distribution

      Thank you for your reply.

We distribute in different countries yes. It's then a possibility they source form there.

I knew about The Book Depository owned by Amazon. Then about tracking the purchases, would The Book Depository buy from Amazon? Do we get cut out along the way somewhere?

Sorry if this is another area from your expertise.

It's possible they could be buying from overstocked, or bankrupt shops. Could be. Probably the used ones are likely from such shops. But there are many sources on the Amazon page even for our new book:

I don't know how common it is to have books bought from bookshops by wholesalers?

      Thank you
