What Should I Buy From China – Branded Or Unbranded?

Hi. Does anybody here have any views on what I should buy from China? What are the advantages or disadvantages of branded vs unbranded products?

All advice and information on the best type of products to import would be welcome.

You cannot buy authentic branded goods from China. It is less a question of branded vs unbranded and more an issue of good quality vs poor quality. Here I am using the word quality in the context of expected returns for the money that you and your customer are investing.

China and other third world countries have cheaper labor and therefore produce cheaper commodities which naturally give you a bigger profit making margin. But they also have less strict quality and safety norms which can lead to these very products becoming a health hazard or duds in the hands of the customer. It is a tradeoff that everybody deals with.

An unbranded product made in China may be worse than a store brand so it is really a question of the amount of research that you are willing to put in. Instead of trying to find a good supplier online, you should be willing to put in the necessary legwork – Go attend some trade events, meet representatives of industry associations and actually inspect factory sites and their produce.

After you do that, the choice will be much simpler and it will not be about branded vs unbranded but profitability vs loss.

In the branded vs unbranded question, go for unbranded. They will cost less and could be similar in quality to the branded ones, provided you choose the right supplier and provide the correct specifications. What value does a Chinese brand have anyway? Choose stuff that is labor intensive since that is what these guys do best.

China is famous for making knock offs of all the well known brands. So you need to be very careful when buying branded from China. In fact, the rule is don't buy branded from China, if it is authentic it will always cost more than you can source locally. Don’t even assume for a minute that some guy in China can give you Ipod nanos at half their retail price.

I have a few additional points on the branded vs unbranded debate:

      • For electronics and such mid-high value goods, unbranded or relatively unkown brands can be significantly better for a reseller, they can offer much higher margins and if you offer a good guarantee they offer consumers the same peace of mind as branded goods, at a much lower price.

      • For categories such as handicrafts or toys or something creative, many people are ok purchasing unbranded goods, provided they come with some reassurances (eg paints used in toys)

      • If you offer some kind of guarantee with the products – exchange or refund, people will not mind purchasing a product even if it is unbranded.

The thing about branded vs unbranded is that brands have the ability to attract a premium that unbranded objects do not, but that is true only if the customer attaches some value to the brand.

To be frank, I still think that the branded products sell better than unbranded products. But as Allen said that you cannot buy authentic branded goods from China. In fact, many people import fake branded products. In this case, you should think a way to cope with the Customs.

This forum does not tolerate infringements on third parties ideas. Trademarks and copyrights are in place to reward creativity and personal effort. Infringing on the copyright of others is not the way to build a sustainable business. It may work for you in China for some time, but by the time Chinese laws catch up with intellectual property protection (which will happen sooner than we all think), you will be left with no business. You may earn some cash in the process, but you will lose the opportunity to learn about legitimate business processes.

As far as importing counterfeit products, the penalties for importers in the West are very strict, including confiscation of private property and jail time.

Go for the unbranded product. China prohibit exporting counterfeit branded product. You will find a lot of unbranded product at very good quality. But better to seek products that bring no risk of hurting Human health. Cloth, electronics are preferable.

I will also suggest to buy unbranded products, as you are not in China, you can not know what you are buying a real brand or fake, in case you buy some products which are fake, and you don't know that, you might face a big problem at Customs.

Branded things will be more expensive than unbranded things here in China
