For calculating any duties for UK imports a great online tool that is available is the Duty Calculator at Calculate your import duty in a few quick steps for free | The DutyCalculator . I worked out some information specific to dietary supplements to see what might come out. Here is what I found for you:
      • Using the Duty Calculator I put in that I was importing diet supplement capsules from the USA to the UK valued at 150.00, insurance of 150.00 and 50.00 for shipping. The calculated VAT would be 78.96 and the import duty would be 44.80. One note is that if the product shipment is valued at less than 135.00 there is no duty but there would be VAT. At this time diet supplements have an import duty rate of 12.8% and VAT of 20% but note this can change so it is best to use the duty calculator when possible.
      • On the other hand, I tried calculating a pharmaceutical tablet for weight loss (different category) with the same values. There was no duty but still the 20% VAT.
      • All of the duty and VAT rates can be verified at this site – it is not quite as easy to use as the duty calculator but does provide an authoritative source for you: HM Revenue & Customs: Home Page
      • Note that tablets or powders categorized as “food” are where most supplements are marked. These include vitamins, minerals, cod liver oil, seaweed, ginseng, malt extracts, wheat germ, and so on.
      • When calculating the duty you need to know that shipping is included, and VAT also includes all costs including shipping. This keeps away the tricksters who think they can bring in product at a low price but charge a lot for shipping.
