Importing skin care products from US to UK - VAT, duty, standards

I am working out details with a skin care product distributor in the US to import skin products to the UK. What do I need to know to import skin care products?

Do I have to pay VAT since I am importing the skin crmes from outside the EU? How can I calculate the duty on the shipment? Do I have to pay customs before I receive the items?

This is my first time importing and I want to make sure I understand all the rules.

Since this is your first time importing goods from the United States to the UK, I would recommend reviewing the HRMC guidelines and call their helpline. The HMR helpline is 0845 010 9000.

VAT is collected on all imports at 20 percent. Custom charges may be paid beforehand or the courier can include this service in their administration fees.

If VAT and customs are not paid, then, the skin care products will be kept in holding.

Here is a duty calculator that can help you figure up charges on importing skin products:

The Tariff classification office can tell you how to classify the skin care products.

      Their telephone number is 01702366077.

What can I do to make sure the skin care shipment doesn’t get held up in customs?

You can register with HM Revenue and Customs so your skin care goods will go through customs quickly. Registering also defers custom payments by 30 days.

Paying customs, VAT and filling out the appropriate paperwork will help you get through customs with no issue - that is if you are importing legit skin care products.

Make sure your skin care product distributor provides you with all the necessary information to prove that the chemicals can enter the UK. Customs is always on the alert for counterfeit products.

All the lotions and moisturizing products I plan to import are a 100 percent authentic. I have no worries with customs placing my skin care shipment under suspension.

Can I reclaim the VAT I pay on the import?

Yes, you can reclaim VAT on imports using the C79 certificate, which is on the HMRC website
