Importing Products from China - What is the Exact Process for Importing?

Hello all, I am new to importing and will become an import expert with time.

I am starting a company and importing a product from China (Shenzhen). The market responds well to this particular product so that's not the problem. I am not sure of the exact process for importing and I've read all the threads on this forum, but experience is always better than reading tons of info.

My question is with the big importing companies out there, DHL, FedEx and UPS. Which of these supplies the best value and simplicity for importing a product from China? From getting the product to getting it to my company location?

The manufacturer is FOB: Port Shenzhen. I would like to get this product sooner than via ship since it's almost the holiday season. Since their terms are FOB, can I use an agent of some sort to go from FOB Shenzhen to Air? I live in Cincinnati Ohio and would like to go FOB Shenzhen to Air Hong Kong to Cincinnati Ohio. I believe I will be using DHL for this but wanted ideas to make this easier and cost effective. Product is only about $1500 USD at most.

Are the costs better to use the "big boys" easier than free companies?

      Thanks !

      Hi,

For $1500 worth of goods, espcially if they are not large goods, I believe door to door courier would indeed be your cheapest option. Sea shipping becomes feasible for slightly larger shipments, due to the fixed cost involved on each side, however it all does on volume of goods too.

In terms of couriers, DHL is the fastest while, others are good enough and tend to be cheaper. If you are importing from China, feel free to drop us an email and we maybe able to help with your quality control as well as courier needs.

      Thanks

Imex is correct in saying that door to door courier service is your best option. Not only is sea freight slow, but for small value shipments it can sometimes be more expensive than shipping by air.

As for the main part of your question regarding the exact process:

For small shipments I recommend asking the supplier to quote including door to door air courier delivery, but it must include Customs clearance charges. If you have an air courier account you might like to ask them for a quote, but Chinese suppliers generally get better rates than you will.

      The exact process is simple:

If you have been quoted door to door, the supplier pays the freight.
The supplier books the carrier pick up.
The carrier handles all aspects of the shipment from the supplier's premises to your door including Customs clearance if that was included in the quote. It usually is but you should make sure that it is.
The carrier pays the duty (and Tax if applicable) on your behalf and notifies you.
You pay the carrier for the duty and tax. The carrier delivers to your door.

There are other possibilities, so don't hesitate to ask if you need more information.

Thanks all, I definitely appreciate it, first time importing and dealing with China manufacturer.

The manufacturer is requesting an account number for the "samples". I think I will just skip this part and order a smaller amount (Opinions)?

I will give via DHL or FedEx, most likely DHL. Would it be smarter to use a personal account rather then business account for the time being? DHL is placing a credit per month agreement as per the business ($2500) which I know I wont be able to fulfill at first. I do not want that at this time. I just need an account so I can get products into the USA.

I also will be going with a small order, 300 pieces so it will be under $1000. ($650 more so)

I have not requested other means of shipment with the supplier due to the quote being FOB. I will ask door to door. With DHL, will they cover all the customs clearance, and everything else logistically speaking once I give the manufacturer an account, I will update the quote from them and see if they are able to air express via door to door.

      Thanks in advance. Michael.

      Hi Michael,

I am concerned that you may be moving too fast without sufficient knowledge of the process. For example, are you aware that air courier charges could equal or exceed the total amount you are paying for the product?

I suggest that you ask the supplier to quote you door to door, not FOB. If you open an account with a courier in the US, it is highly likely that you will pay a lot more than if the supplier uses their own choice of courier and prepays the freight for you.

If you do choose to open an account with a courier, you must get the quote in writing and it must include Customs clearance work. In order to get that quote you will need to tell them individual carton weight and dimensions, total number of cartons, total weight of the shipment, and product description, as well as address for collection and address for delivery.

If the courier charge is very high, you may find it necessary to get a freight forwarder to quote you on air freight door to door, not air courier door to door. It will be a bit slower, but a lot cheaper. As I stated above, the quote must include Customs clearance work and must be in writing.

I hope you have done your due diligence on the supplier. There are many traders who falsely claim to be manufacturers, and there are many suppliers on the big B2B sites who will scam unsuspecting buyers.

      Update

      Hello all,

Here is a update on my current situation. And honesty a bit frustrating and pretty sure my father was scammed. Not my doing. I blame him for this if it goes south..

To give a quick background, I found this product from a Chinese directory, contacted the "Suppler" and received a quote. I have done my dd on the importing processes for 3 months and was wise enough to not place an order myself because I was uncertain this invoice and all was legit, I wanted to do this process correctly. I'm paranoid about stuff like this. I have been working on this for 2-3 months as far as my personal knowledge and the processes involved of importing which is why I haven't actually placed the order myself. My father is a crazy, loving and caring man and through discussion and him being family I explained my situation and he decided to take the plunge ignorantly and placed the order himself. It was small $, product was 550 and shipping was 200. door to door, via DHL express. he paid in full via Western Union. I was pretty upset and now I'm scrambling even more than before because of this possible mistake (and blessing maybe). Now I have to find another manufacturer that can produce this particular product, there is a proven market for this and this is my first venture within the business world. So with the manufacture time and shipping he should be getting the product before January, or whenever it "arrives". Assuming this works out for the best, (I don't think it will) or by the Grace of God himself the items arrive.

That's my story and figured I'd update all, everyone on these boards have experience and have been a huge asset within this new journey of mine, and for me personally I see so much opportunity to help others by introducing items that will make their lives better, and not necessarily for want.

Any advice or assistance would be helpful. Please feel free to contact me anytime, I would love to build a long term relationship with individuals who see things within my vision.

      Thank you all.

      Update

      Hello all,

I have been rather busy and haven't spent much time on the forum.

But previously posted, I was unsure about the decisions that were made. I have received the product and everything seems to be good. There was no issue at all via shipping and will place another order slightly larger. The product was not exactly as described but I am able to still use and resell.

I wanted to thank those who helped.

I will continue with the business as normal and continue looking for manufactures and ways to better this.

      Thanks again

I was waiting to see how this story ended and glad to see that worked out for the most part!

There are always many things to consider when importing product, from the basic items of who will be responsible for shipping (you or the supplier) to the very technical, such as products that are subject to ADD (anti dumping duty) which is assessed on some products which can end up costing as much if not more than the purchase price of the product itself. Courier shipments are simple enough to handle but especially as the size of the shipment increases more things will come into play. If you have any questions, general or specific, as you scale up your imports, please feel free to reach out to me.

      All the best
      Jesse
