Im looking at ordering a crate of kitesurfing power kites from the US. Im having trouble navigating the Harmonized Schedule to find their duty and VAT rate. Any help from the gallery?

First of all, you’ll be wanting to check out the Duty Calculator - it’s a lovely little tool that will, for free, tell you the duty and VAT rate for pretty much anything you can plug in to it. If you want the actuall HS code, you’ll need to pay for a 2.99 membership, but whoopty-doo.

As to your actual question, kitesurfing kites (on their own) are duty-free, and run a VAT of 20%, so a 200 power kite is going to run you 240, prior to any shipping and insurance costs. I know the dollar is weak versus the pound sterling, but VAT, shipping and handling and insurance can quickly counteract that advantage. Even free shipping and insurance of just 5% will get you marked up to nearly 270. As with everything in this business, check all your angles before you enter into a transaction!

Take note, though, if you’re going to import something other than the kitesurfing kite (like a land board, for instance), make sure you import them as distinct items and bundle them together for transit. This will make sure your kite stays duty free, as opposed to the ~2.7% duty for the hypothetical land board.
